The Idiot’s Guide to Layoffs

Ed Vogel of the Las Vegas Review-Journal writes this morning that “Layoffs may be coming to state government.” The economy continues to stumble along and the governor apparently will need to reduce some more of the increase the government received last year. He’s planning to make an announcement next Monday.

But that didn’t stop union agitator Dennis Mallory of the government employees’ gang from jumping the gun and throwing a conniption. “If there are any staff reductions in prisons there would be an immediate threat to the community,” Mallory breathlessly exclaimed to Vogel (I’m guessing). “Who’s to stop prisoners from jumping over the walls?”

How to put this gently?

Dennis Mallory is an idiot.

Does he really think anyone with an IQ above room temperature believes that any staff cuts the governor would be forced to make would include prison guards so that inmates could simply walk away?

No. Seriously. If Dennis Mallory actually said this - and considering what a longtime professional reporter Ed Vogel is, I have no doubt he did - then Dennis Mallory is an idiot. I mean, there’s just no polite way to put it. The guy apparently fell out of the Stupid Tree and hit every branch on the way down.

Then again, I’m sugar-coating it.

  1. Not so fast, Chuck. You know as well as I that, when faced with budget cuts, gov’t agencies aim first for the bone leaving all the fat securely in place. How can we greedy, tight-fisted taxpayers realize the folly of reducing taxes and spending if we are not forced to feel the pain? So, rather than laying off the administrative assistant to the 7th assistant to the assistant executive director of cell block D, they’ll let go a guard.

  2. Chuck,

If the Governor calls for more budget reductions and Correctional Officers are layed off as a result of those reductions would you be willing to call yourself an idiot?

If you’re a stand-up man you should because if Director Skolnik can’t rent out Jean Prison to Clark County that is exactly what will happen. If you don’t believe me call Director Skolnik.
