Buckley’s Castle

Gov. Jim Gibbons met with a host of legislative leaders and assorted staffers yesterday to discuss how an estimated $900 million budget shortfall should be handled. According to columnist/pundit/blogger/television host Jon Ralston, lawmakers suggested options other than across-the-board cuts, “such as freezing capital projects.”

Hmmm. OK, I suggest we start with the extensive remodeling job currently underway in Speaker Barbara Buckley’s legislative office. I went over there yesterday afternoon and it was like being on the set of “This Old House” - only the remodeling project is being done on the taxpayer’s dime.

In fact, you should see the extent of construction/remodeling going on throughout the entire legislative building. I mean, it’s obscene. The place is only open for six months every other year! Why in the world is so much money being dumped into this building…especially in bad financial times? Why does our part-time citizen Legislature need an empty Taj Mahal?

Before legislators start throwing stones at everyone else’s house, maybe they should get their own glass house in order.

  1. Chuck,
Thanks for the info! Will you provide the AB or SB that authorizes this expenditure? And, what is the total sum authorized for all of the legislative building?
