Stupid Is as Stupid Does

Another chapter of “Great Moments in Public Education” was written this week in Sparks, Nev., where a public school principal - Kristen McNeill of Moss Elementary School - decreed that children may no longer gather in groups larger than three during recess unless they’re involved in a “structured activity.”

Students in grades four through six may now only gather together on the playground if it doesn’t “look like they’re sitting there without an activity,” Fräulein McNeill says. Kids just sitting on the ground in a circle talking to each other is now deemed a dangerous practice which must be stopped at all costs.

Good grief. And some people wonder why I home-school my kids?

  1. Well, this anecdotal event sure gives you some serious 30-30 ammo!

Recess, it’s not for rest anymore! Structure-Structure! “Hey, is that a vodoo doll of me?!”

  2. When I was in grade school (back in the prehistoric time, 1950’s) we would play tag, baseball, touch football, etc. And the teachers did not organize it. It is amazing how stupid we were, not taking part in structured activity. This ranks right up there with not keeping score as it might hurt someones feelings. Aren’t publik skools great?
