Pick-up Opportunity

Longtime and highly-respected Clark County Commission Bruce Woodbury - for whom the Las Vegas Beltway has been named - has a daughter who happens to be an elementary school teacher and who “currently teaches children with autism and works to help them become more independent and functional in everyday situations.” Melissa Woodbury is also following in Dad’s footsteps, announcing yesterday as a Republican candidate for Assembly District 23, once held by former Assembly Speaker Richard Perkins.

Not surprisingly, Melissa’s campaign focus will be on the issue of education.

“While there are pockets of success in classrooms around the valley, we need to do more to improve the overall quality of education in Nevada,” Woodbury says in a press release announcing her candidacy. “We need more parent, teacher, and school autonomy in our education system; I believe a bottom-up approach to education is the best way to help our children succeed. We also need less red tape and more targeted funding for the classroom.”

Yes, absolutely. Let’s take money out of “administration” and put it in the classroom where it belongs. For the children, of course.

While this district leans Democrat, the Woodbury name is worth it’s weight in gold in that area. This could be a pick-up opportunity for Republicans, especially since the Democrat incumbent isn’t running for re-election.

  1. How many teachers are running this year? I read in the RJ that Thalia Dondero’s (Board of Regents) daughter, a retired Clark County teacher who now sells textbooks to schools, is running for assembly.
