Based on past experience, the only thing worse than having someone show up at your door and saying, “Hi, I’m from the government and I’m here to help,” is being a Republican congressional candidate and having someone knock at your door saying, “Hi, I’m from the National Republican Congressional Committee and I’m here to help.” Does anyone remember what a bang-up job they did for Lynette Boggs-McDonald in her race against Rep. Shelley Berkley a few years ago?
So it didn’t come as any surprise to read this insipid statement sent out on Tuesday by the political svengalis over at the NRCC’s press office (hat tip to Jon Ralston’s Flash):
“Dina Titus should think long and hard before launching a second long-shot campaign. Two losses in a row would be career-ending for her. Nevada voters rejected Dina Titus in 2006 because of her liberal record for hiking taxes and giving benefits to illegal immigrants. She should think twice before launching another campaign that will surely end in defeat once again.”
Big talk. Dumb talk.
Silly inflammatory statements such as this will do nothing but encourage someone like Titus to get in the race (which she’ll do later today). And considering the fact that Titus, while losing statewide to Jim Gibbons in the 2006 gubernatorial race, nevertheless carried this particular district…and that incumbent Republican Rep. Jon Porter barely defeated a virtual unknown to retain his seat that same year…and that the Democrats have opened up a voter registration lead of more than 20,000 since that time…methinks the NRCC chest-pounding is a bit ill-considered.
OK, dumb.
