Life After Bruce Almighty

Nevada’s misguided term limits law has done what voters of Clark County Commission District A have refused to do since the early 1980s - kick the highly respected and popular Bruce Woodbury off the county commission.

The recent Supreme Court decision banning Woodbury from seeking another term, however, didn’t result in Woodbury’s name being taken off the ballot. He’ll be there in the August 12 GOP primary with fellow Republican Brian Scroggins (and another unknown candidate) since there wasn’t enough time after the court’s decision to remove his name.

Arguing that Scroggins doesn’t have the money or backing to hold Woodbury’s seat for Republicans against the expected well-funded Democrat candidate, University Regent Steve Sisolak, a concerted effort is underway in Commission A to persuade voters to vote for Woodbury anyway. The thinking is - and this is a matter of some legal dispute - that if the disqualified Woodbury wins, the Clark County Republican Party would get to choose a replacement candidate for the general election; a candidate with far better electoral chances than Scroggins.

Scroggins may not have enough money or name ID to defeat Sisolak, but he’s built up a lot of grassroots chits over the years as a party activist. And he’s hired one of the state’s top GOP political guru’s to run his race, Ryan Erwin. So this one could get ugly if Woodbury comes out ahead on August 12th. And with early voting already underway, those who want to rally for Woodbury and, thereby, an alternative candidate for the general election better start moving FAST.
