Michelle, My Belle

In her convention speech tonight, Michelle Obama succeeded in presenting an image at complete odds with what most folks who have watched this campaign closely believe is the real Michelle Obama. To that end, it was a fine performance. And indeed, much of the speech could well have been delivered to a Republican convention. But where it succeeded most, in my opinion, was in showing the nation that she’s not Hillary Clinton and not Teresa Heinz Kerry. And for that alone, I figure she hit a home run.

And believing that nothing is left to chance in something as well-scripted as a prime-time keynote speech by a First Lady wannabe - in addition to the fact that race will absolutely play a role in this race this year - I found it rather interesting that Michelle’s brother, in introducing her, went way out of his way to tell the nation that Michelle Obama, despite only being allowed to watch an hour of TV a day, apparently memorized every episode of decidedly white-bread “The Brady Bunch.”

I wonder what was wrong with “The Cosby Show”?

Meanwhile, The Hill reported yesterday that “Racial prejudice is being cited among senior union leaders to explain Sen. Barack Obama’s difficulty in winning over support from white rank-and-file members.”

Here’s what I don’t get. White folks are constantly being slapped around for their prejudice against black folks. It’s wrong, they’re told, to vote against Barack Obama just because of his race. And I don’t disagree. There are a TON of reasons other than race not to vote for Barack Obama.

But what I find offensive every time I read a story like this is that no one mentions the fact that 92 percent of blacks say they’re going to vote FOR Barack Obama, and a large portion of that number will be voting purely and solely because the guy is black.

Let’s not have these double standards. If it’s wrong to vote against a guy just because of his race, then it’s equally wrong to vote for a guy just because of his race. The media should start pointing this out instead of glossing over the fact that it’s not just whites who are racists.

  1. Agreed. That was pretty good.

  2. Mrs. Obama is Mother Theresa; I just love her “story” of leaving the law office to care for those who have not, she was so human and so good, she never for one memute stop to think if by leaving a good job would she take away the future of the girls she spends all her time and life thinking about them. Mrs. Obama is just a very crafty lady, if only she could tell us what she really thinks we would all be surprise about her hate for the white race, as far as the Senator goes, he is 50/50 but he selected to be 100% black; I read both his books and I cannot understand this love he has for his father, this father was never a father and, as Mrs. Obama often stated, his mother care for him and she was on welfare? This is a lie, his gradparents cared for him, but let us believe that his mother was on welfare, since the Senator had a father I see no reason why the mother needed the help of the American Citizens to care for the son of a father who did not give a damn!

  3. Typical Liberal Damocrat crap !

  4. One of the biggest problem I had with Michelle Obama is her repeated use of the term “America as it SHOULD BE”. IMO, no single person has the right to determine ‘SHOULD BE”. How Michelle Obama views, “sees”, America is in sharp contrast with millions of other people. Why does she believe her view of how America “SHOULD BE” is correct?

  5. Is there anyway we could get Michelle to sit down, within the next day or two, to recite - from memory - every episode of “The Brady Bunch”? Perhaps we could video stream it on Al Gore’s internet.

  6. There seems to be alot we don’t know and need to begin connecting the dots to get the unvarnished story. Michelle Obama reportedly enjoys a salary estimated at $350,000 working for a prestegious hospital in Chicago. More interestingly, that same hospital reportedly has earned a reputatoin for turning away people that are uninsurred and dumped disproportionately on other nearby hospitals.

  7. While I find the hype around Obama irritating, I disagree with your interpretation of why most African Americans are voting for Obama.

“92 percent of blacks say they’re going to vote FOR Barack Obama, and a large portion of that number will be voting purely and solely because the guy is black.”

The problem with your statement is that if Obama were white we would still receive around 92% of African American votes. African Americans tend to be a monolithically Democrat block. If Obama were running against an African American Republican…say for instance Alan Keyes. Odds are that Obama would still get 92% of the African American vote. In fact, black voters will typically support a white Democrat over a black Republican by a roughly equal ratio. Instead of blaming African Americans, maybe Republicans should ask themselves why they are repelling so many non-white voters.
