Who’s Laughing Now?

A few months after Dean Heller thumped Jill Derby the first time to become Nevada’s representative for the 2nd congressional district, the liberals, the Democrats and their “amen” corner in certain parts of the mainstream media were giggling like little schoolgirls over this quote about the conservative freshman from Carson City…

“In 2007, Congress.org rated Dean Heller as the second least effective and powerful congressmen in the U.S. House of Representatives. He tied with one other congressmen for the rank of 435 out of 438. Heller’s rank among Republicans is 199 out of 202 congressmen.”

Ah, what a difference a year makes.

As you probably already know, Rep. Heller was named this week to arguably the most powerful committee in all of Congress: The House Ways and Means Committee. This is a congressional plum most congress-critters would die for.

And today it was announced that Heller was also added to the sub-committees on taxes and income security.

“The Committee on Ways and Means is the chief tax-writing committee of the United States House of Representatives,” notes Heller’s office in a news release this morning. “It is an exclusive committee that has jurisdiction over all taxation, tariffs and other revenue-raising measures as well as Social Security and Medicare.

“The Subcommittee on Select Revenues Measures has jurisdiction over tax policy prior to full Committee consideration. The Income Security and Family Support Subcommittee has oversight of the Federal-State system of unemployment compensation, certain Social Security Act programs, food stamps, and child and family services.”

We’re gonna need a HUGE bottle of ketchup (Hunt’s, not Hienz) for all the crow the Heller-haters are eating this week!

  1. I guess Democrats will just have to sooth themselves with having control of the Assembly and Senate, two out of three Nevada house seats, and the fact that Obama carried the state by a 12% margin.

  2. Way to go Chucky, you found a morsel of pride for your defunct party….what a maroon…Who cares about Heller’s position, when this schmuck voted 92% for Bush’s policies…and guess what Chuck, Obama was elected, Nevada turned blue, our State legislation turned blue…know why? They get tired of the same broken record with no solutions from people like you….thanks Chuck….pass the ketchup now.

  3. John,

Chuck has actually advocated one really good solution, repeatedly. He has been an outspoken advocate of school choice. Unfortunately, rather than press ahead with school choice Republicans typically avoid that one issue like the plague. The one time I actually wish they would stick to their guns, and they dodge.

  4. I predict he will no longer be anywhere near the bottom of the effective congressman list. Good for him. Now all he has to do is the right thing consistently. I’m predicting he’ll try to do that too.
