I'm just morbidly curious: which is better, an astronomical tax increase of 3% on gaming or a much smaller 2% room tax increase? I know, the land of Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz must be frightfully entertaining, but if the polls are correct - and it would appear that they are -- then the Governor and the "fiscal conservatives" can whine all they want, and witness one of the largest tax hikes in Nevada history. It seems far more prudent, from an economic standpoint, to permit the Governor some flexibility here in order to stave off the alternative. Or have you forgotten in your obvious ignorance of Nevada Constitutional Law that the Governor can not veto initiatives? Just some thoughts from the peanut gallery, but perhaps worth chewing over.

Small, weak central government is what the Federalist Papers argued for. Jefferson agreed that there was a great temptation for those in power to expand the small government, but believed that once people had the control over their government, they would not let it go. I guess he was a little naive in that assumption, but at least he argued on the side of trying the experiment. Too bad it didn't work. The Libertarians simply continue that debate in the face of the intense socialism movement in the United States. All this to pander to an electorate that is increasingly being dumbed down and jumping on the bandwagon. Taking advantage of this level of understanding, and indeed, promoting it is similar to Mr. Root's example of duping a elderly man into selling his house for $1. You may be able to do it, but it is extremely immoral, wrong and detrimental to our type of society to do it just because you can. It is really not much different from taking advantage of a defenseless child just because you can dominate or trick them into it.

It is insane to believe that children can make cogent decisions before they get to 18 (some can earlier, some can later, some never can, but you have to choose an age of responsibility, and 18 seems to be pretty fair). The breech of trust of children at early ages leaves a life-long scar that is devastating to the child, but also damaging to a society. The vast majority of these children never recover to become contributing citizens. The perpetrators don't even care and will damage a great many of these innocent minds. I do not know what "Dr. Ruwalt" is a doctor in, but it certainly is not psychology. She is dangerous and the fact that she has enough of a following to be published is freightening.

There are some laws that the vast majority of society members believe in, such as: stealing, murder, rape, child molestation, and fraud. There are others that are simply vestiges of influencial people forcing their desires on a gullible population. Most people do not believe in these laws and they are not either accepted and often violated. Examples are speeding, income taxes, government welfare, drug laws, immigration enforcement, and perks for elected officials. Most people have to be forced into compliance, but do not have their hearts in the enforcement of these laws. These should simply not be laws.

Anyway, thanks, Wayne, for the cogent thought piece. You are a very viable alternative to our one-party choices. I will do my best to convince people to break the mold, but, I have to admit, I am not having much luck. Most people are scared of the wrong things and listening to the false Gods. Not much different from cavemen, but I guess we are really just cavemen with better technology when you get down to it. Still, we have to keep up the good fight.

In Sydney, Australia, we breed the same kind of cleverness and its incredibly easy to get around it. Unwittingly, I left a small Victorinox pocket knife (including mini-scissors !) on my keychain which safely bypassed the airport scanner/security goons at both Sydney Airport and Melbourne on the return trip. Yep, these guys are nature's sharpest, as you'd expect from the $8 per hour temporary resident class they're recruited from.

In Shanghai, China, they used fully locally bred inteligentsia, and I found they were much more vigilant. I got held up and asked if I had any "tools" in my carry-on back-pack. I couldn't think of any. After a careful search, I discovered it was a cheap pair of chiropody pliers I'd bought the day before. They tried to insist I go back and pack them in my in-the-hold baggage - but that had long disappeared down the big long shute to the baggage handlers. It took some time and the help of my interpreter to convince them it was okay to toss them in the bin - apparently they suspected I might have been trying to frame them for stealing them. The only thing that was absurd about this was that no sooner we'd boarded the plane, us at the front of the plane were presented with quite sharp knives and forks of far more use to a terrorist that any chiropody plier or pocket knife could be ! Admittedly, this was 2002, and I'm sure even the dining utensil threat has been thoroughly dealt with.

I congratulate you on this investigation; looks like it will be quite revealing. Gee, anyone go to Vegas on a Friday and come back to Reno on Monday?

Too, I suggest you square the flights with per diem requests...are there too many per diem requests for the number of days or parts of days, away from the office?

Chuck,
Do other government employees in Washoe County get MLK Day off with pay? At first blush, I read the story as the RTC employees trying to get the federal holiday off just like the rest of the government employees do (and banks, too), for this and all the other recognized holidays.

Can't agree that there is a racial issue here.

Wally is a collection of writers who use the name on many blogs around the US. The name predates the Nevada edition of Policker.
I started asking this very question about 8 months ago when the blog appeared.
By the way, I think the Paul people have an absolutely legit beef.
I'd be VERY pissed if my Party tried that crap. It is an insult to the democratic process and the very people who showed up.
It's funny, but since the Democratic Party REQUIRES open signed ballots and open meeting at every level, they often look unorganized and raucus, at least they don't shut down the freaking event when the results don't please the Overlords.

Carson City is the Capitol. Almost every one lives in Vegas.
Maybe we should move the Capitol.
Or maybe Zeke could be hired to "negotiate" a better deal with Southwest.
I'm sure they will listen to "Reason".

Chuck,

Thanks for the mention. The next installment of the "Ron Paul Circus" is slated to go up later today. Keep in touch as much, much more is on the way on our end.

And keep up the good work. Don't let this guy bully you into silence - his tactics won't work on me, and I'm glad to see they aren't working on you.
