The Proportional Viet Nam Template

From the Jordan Times:
The fumbling that took place, particularly over the past month, underlines the failure of the Bush Administration (and its Israeli partner, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert) to learn from the experiences of its predecessors. The most important lesson goes as far back as the Vietnam War when all of America’s might couldn’t break the back of the Viet Cong, which successfully evicted the Americans from that Southeast Asian nation. Indeed, similar Hezbullah’s performance when it compelled Israel to unceremoniously withdraw from southern Lebanon.
This could have been written by John Kerry, Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, or any number of Democrats. Even more still from the left blogosphere. We’ve heard it since the early days of Afghanistan. Quagmire!
These people, as well as many in the MSM have used the Viet Nam Template to describe the War against Islamic Fascism. The “This War is Just Like Viet Nam”, and the “Bush is Just Like Nixon” (or worse) is a tired and worn-out mantra that needs to be put to bed.
The world sees the divisiveness of the Democrats, and quotes their own talking points to promote an even greater divide. Witness the article above, and others like it. Witness Iran’s Ahmadinijad quoting “Bush’s Poll Numbers” in his 60-Minutes interview.
Here’s one more excerpt from the Jordan Times :
Hezbullah’s performance in showering northern Israel with rockets and creating havoc in Haifa, the country’s third largest city, speaks volumes and cuts down to size the world’s fourth largest military power - something no Arab regime has been able to do since the founding of Israel in 1948. In fact, Arab governments which were initially critical of Hezbullah’s daring actions, which could have been resolved diplomatically as was the case in the past, have in the end come around to support their kith and kin
“Showering northern Israel”, civilian targets, is seen by the Arab world as a legitimate and proportional way to conduct warfare. It shouldn’t be a surprise. In GW1, Saddam’s proportionate response was to fire scud missiles at Israel, a non-combatant in the affair. Perhaps then, Israel’s proportionate response should be to announce that incoming hizballah rockets will be met by outgoing rockets, targeting, … Damascus.

A good buddy of mine was telling me about his post-college days spent in Haifa, and had some interesting observations during the first weekend of the Northern War. He remarked that the reporters had talked about the lack of traffic and commerce on that Saturday. My friend, David, said “That would be the case on just about any Sabbath in Haifa!” Heh.
Thanks for stopping by Nancy.
