So I’m sitting here, goofing on the web a little, playing footsie with ma’boy Buddy the Cat, and watching UAB vs. SMU.
The SMU Mustangs, the only NCAA school to ever be issued the ‘death penalty‘ for recruiting violations, in the late 80’s, and they haven’t recovered from that punishment yet.
The head coach of SMU is an old friend, and caddy-corner neighbor, when I was growing up. Phil Bennett is his name, and he is about six years younger than me, and one of his older brothers(his running backs coach) and I graduated from high school the same year.
Of the three Bennett boys, Phil is the most interesting, and the most successful, of a family of coaches. He has served as defensive coordinator at Purdue, LSU, Texas A&M, TCU, Kansas State, before getting his first head coaching job, back in 2002. He was a Parade All-American linebacker in high school, went to Texas A&M on a full-ride, but didn’t get invited to the big show, so he got into coaching, seeing as how it was a family business.
When he got the Defensive Coordinators job at K-State, he had only been there a few months, and summer training was about to begin for the upcoming football season…it was mid August. His adored and adoring wife, and mother of their two cherished children, went out for her usual morning jog, after Phil left for the field house. Witnesses said it was a freak storm, just a small dark cloud passed over very quickly, no warning and no forecast for bad weather, and then it happened. A lightning bolt, from the tiny thundercloud, struck in the back, and according to witnesses, struck her so hard, she was literally thrown face first into the sidewalk. A bolt from out of the blue, both literally and figuratively. She was kept alive for several days, as the sad truth was she was no more, but the sad decision was delayed, in order to get all family and friends there that could come. Faced with this tragic loss, the demands of a Div-IA, nationally ranked team, facing another tough Big 12 schedule, and hopes for a National Championship, Phil soldiered on. They did well that year, only one or two losses, and a good bowl game.
Tonight, Phil’s team, the ‘Ponies are leading 15-7, with about 3 minutes to go, and if his team can hold on, then win at least one more game, it will be the first winning season the ‘Stangs have had in many moons, a possible bowl game, as a reward. I predict, that if Phil continues to get SMU to improve, he will get a shot at a coaching job at a big-time program one day.
Go Ponies!
