Utah allows guns on campus

April 27th, 2007 at 10:47 am . by el nuko
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Brent Tenney says he feels pretty safe when he goes to class at the University of Utah, but he takes no chances. He brings a loaded 9 mm semiautomatic with him every day.”It’s not that I run around scared all day long, but if something happens to me, I do want to be prepared,” said the 24-year-old business major, who has a concealed-weapons permit and takes the handgun everywhere but church.

After the massacre at Virginia Tech that left 33 dead, some have suggested that the carnage might have been lower if a student or professor with a gun had stepped in.

Afghan district falls. Should dems surrender now or later?

April 27th, 2007 at 2:52 am . by el nuko
KABUL, Afghanistan — The Taliban conducted a raid in Afghanistan’s volatile south and took control of a provincial district, killing five people including the district chief and the head of the district police, the deputy governor said Friday.
The Taliban launched the attack Thursday evening on the Giro district of Ghazni province and during an hours-long clash killed the district chief and four policemen, including the district police chief, said provincial deputy governor Kazim Allayer.
Allayer said the Taliban set fire to several buildings in the district and cut communications lines. Deputy police chief Mohammad Zaman said police reinforcements have been sent to the area

Before these developments cause Harry Reid to poop his panties and have to clean up with just one square of TP, he can be comforted by this analysis from UPI:

Analysis:  Muslims Reject Violence

WASHINGTON, April 25 (UPI) — A new poll of citizens in four Muslim countries reveals a fundamental weakness in the so-called war of ideas, a subset of the U.S. “global war on terrorism” that is aimed at draining support among Muslims for violent extremism.

Muslims already overwhelmingly reject violence against civilians as contrary to Islam. At the same time, they support the stated political goals of the al-Qaida terrorist network and are deeply suspicious of the United States’ intentions in the war on terror.

Hunh!
Don’t have the time to process this report. Somehow, it just don’t seem quite right, but then the guy at the end sort of sets it straight.

“The danger for al Qaeda, of course, is that an extended American presence is actually a huge defeat for them, as has been the case in Afghanistan and is actually in Iraq,” he added. “I’m also quite sure that the one thing al Qaeda would most celebrate as a victory is an American withdrawal from Iraq.”

Well, then, I’m glad that we have that all straightened out. Those people that are getting blown up and shot and beheaded and tortured to death and all, guess it was just some sort of mass delusion because of Islam being all against violence.

I believe that there article is a good example of cognitive dissonance.

Yikes, wind advisory in effect. Hope nobody flicks a cigarette out the window on a roadside abutting a forest anywhere near me.

I’m glad you specified which poopy-pants Reid you were referring to, as the Reid in the UK has exhibited, what must be, the same defeatist attitude that this Reid does.
Perhaps the muslims in these four countries need to listen to this guy.

Major terrorist cell busted in Saudi

April 27th, 2007 at 1:57 am . by el nuko

saudi.jpgBreaking news: Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Fox News is reporting that a major operation by Saudi authorities has uncovered a plot to destroy Saudi oil fields. Large caches of weaponry and money were discovered, some buried in the desert sand. Fox reports the arrest of 172 terrorists in the operation.

~Developing…updates to follow

Update from BBC: Those detained are said to be both Saudi and foreign nationals, Interior Ministry spokesman Gen Mansur al-Turki told local media. Large amounts of weapons and $5.33m (£2.67m) in cash were also seized.
Some of the suspects were training as pilots and planning attacks on oil installations and military bases, according to the interior ministry.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) — Troops captured four suspected members of a secret terrorist training network in Baghdad, the U.S. military said.

The network takes militants from Iraq to Iran for training, and transports explosives from Iran into Iraq, the military alleges.

“Intelligence reports also indicate the secret cell has ties to a kidnapping network that conducts attacks within Iraq.” the military said.

The suspects were arrested in the Baghdad Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, where support for Iran is high. The Bush administration has long insisted that Iran is helping insurgents create chaos in Iraq.

Many of the powerful, improved explosive devices used in Iraq, and the parts used to make them, have been coming out of neighboring Iran, the U.S. military said.

I wonder what ties will surface connecting Iran to this story?

Drat. I had declared this a no news day, and looks like I’m gonna have to look.

This is odd, though. Since it is oil money that plays a big part in the funding of terrorist operations plus being 45% of GDP (and 90% of exports) for Saudi, it seems a little counterproductive if it is a homegrown effort and, really, haven’t they noticed that without oil revenues, food would be really, really hard to come by for that population? The population at @ 22 million (plus 5 and a half million imported workers) has passed the point at which it would be workable for everybody to graze goats between oasises.

A rendezvous with destiny

April 26th, 2007 at 11:03 am . by el nuko

As the democrat party wrings their hands in a desperate attempt to decide upon an official date of surrender in Iraq, I am reminded by a speech by Ronald Reagan, some 43 years ago…

Let’s set the record straight. There is no argument over the choice between peace and war, but there is only one guaranteed way you can have peace–and you can have it in the next second–surrender.

Admittedly there is a risk in any course we follow other than this, but every lesson in history tells us that the greater risk lies in appeasement, and this is the specter our well-meaning liberal friends refuse to face–that their policy of accommodation is appeasement, and it gives no choice between peace and war, only between fight and surrender.

Much has changed over the past four decades since Reagan gave told us that we have a “rendezvous with destiny. “

Unfortunately, the political left has not changed their first and basic instinct of appeasement. Their policies are dangerous, and a clear and present threat to the security of the Republic. President Bush will veto their surrender bill. That rendezvous that Reagan spoke of is drawing near.

Rebellious?
If your pickemup truck has an airbag in the steering wheel(not behind it), your injuries will be even more severe, if the bag is deployed, and you’re not wearing a restraint. Broken legs fo’sho, and probably massive fractures to the upper body and face.
I’ve always worn them, since my Dad installed them on his favorite Buick, before they were required by law to be installed. He raced cars professionally, before I was born.
Also, I have waded through too many gallons of blood while investigating car accidents, to not ever wear mine.

Great piece by Amir Taheri.
Desparately Seeking Defeat In Iraq.

It is possible that Reid imagined that his analytical problems are over simply because he has identified the loser in this war. The truth is that his troubles are only beginning. He must tell Americans to whom they wish their army to surrender in Iraq.

That Reid is desperately trying to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory is not surprising. His party requires an American defeat in Iraq in order to win the Congressional and presidential elections next year.

SCOTUS poised to strike down McCain-Feingold

April 26th, 2007 at 3:05 am . by el nuko

In a NY Sun report from Jeff Goldstein, if the indications gleaned from yesterday’s oral arguments are correct, the Court is leaning toward striking down key First Amendment provisions in the McCain-Feingold bill related to campaign spending by grassroots organizations. Ironically, this could work in Senator McCain’s favor in the Presidential primaries, effectively removing one of the key issues which cause many conservatives to be less than enthusiastic about his candidacy.

Since deciding to go “all-in”, and stake his Presidential bid on the Iraq War, McCain’s fortunes have improved considerably among the conservative base. The Court’s apparent willingness to do what many thought should have been done four years ago will give McCain an opportunity to re-frame his position in a way that will be more acceptable to the base.

After a concerted effort to reach out religious conservatives who were offended by his statements in the 2000 SC mccain081.gifprimaries, McCain now will need to address the 800 pound gorilla in the room: illegal immigration, an issue that will be, in this writer’s opinion the prevailing issue among conservatives as the situation in Iraq improves.

SwampMan’s male nail driving champion from his classes washed out in the first round of competition, but he was only in the 9th grade and got a little nervous against the big ol’ seniors from some of the other schools, I think. If he takes the class again next year, he should do well.

A member of SwampMan’s class won the Nail Driving Championship sponsored by the builder’s association. A beautiful petite blond-headed girl from his class won the girl’s division. He’s so proud of her! The big ol’ giant boy from another high school that won the boy’s division, when they did the boy versus girl champions nail driving competition, just could *not* bring himself to “beat” a girl, and let her win.

Some of the girls from the other schools that were in the contest, now, SwampMan mentioned that he thought maybe should be chromosome tested to make sure they were in the right division. (I was having to kick him frequently.)

I remember stating I was baffled by Newt’s performance while attending a debate on gorebal warming with the failed Fwench candidate for POTUS.
There had to be another explanation for his behavior, and it appears there was…rope-a-dope!
We Can Have Green Conservatism — And We Should.

The time has come to define a fundamentally different approach to a healthy environment and a healthy economy. The time has come for the development of Green Conservatism as an alternative to big bureaucracy and big litigation liberal environmentalism.
———————-
So in the future, I’m going to be talking a lot about Green Conservatism. After all, conservatives can stand toe to toe with any liberal anywhere in America when it comes to wanting to build a better future for ourselves and our families. Four hundred years of American experience has demonstrated that a commitment to science, entrepreneurship and free markets can create better solutions for a better future than lawyers and bureaucrats and their never-ending schemes of regulation and taxation.
