“Bagpipes Cryin’”…And So Am I!

May 27th, 2007 at 1:17 am . by el nuko

The full story on this song, can be found on this hyperlink to BlackFive.
This is, in my opinion, the finest tribute video I’ve ever seen, and is perfect for the occasion of Memorial Day weekend.
I can’t help but think about all the young men and women who are serving our great nation, and of all the men and women who have done so in our history, some of whom I knew. My parents knew those people in WWII, and my grandparents knew them in WWI. We have one thing in common, from the different Wars and conflicts, and that is some of our friends are forever young.
Watching this video, for the tenth time, I’m reminded how selfless men behave, and their sense of duty, and the honor with which they serve. May God Bless them all.
May God Bless those who disrespect them, as well. Perhaps just one, who believes the worst about our nation and our military, will see this video and come to understand what our selfless young men and women in the military mean to so many.

Greatest of all warriors on earth, the American soldier is capable of fighting fiercely, loving gently, living nobly, and forgiving totally. These are not the war-mongers that feminists and Hollywood have tried desperately to portray; these are gentle, loving creatures who want nothing more than to be free to go on living and loving. It is this desire that enables our brothers to choose to step out of their own selfish tendencies on behalf of another.

From an earlier post.

Thanks for posting this video. It is so appropriate to remind us on Memorial Day how blessed we are to have people who willingly serve and lay their lives down for the freedom that we enjoy. God Bless our troops.

I appreciate that you asked for a blessing on those who disrespect the military and their sacrifices.
I was one such, many years ago. Brought up too liberal in a lagoon of freedom - I was unimpressed by the tales of world wars I hadn’t seen. It took me a long time to understand just how short sighted I was.
So sometimes the liberal heart is changed and when it is, it is a big and permenant change. I could weep for my previous arrogance in the face of these soldiers heroism.
And that goes for you as well no2liberals. You did things and saw things that I can only faintly imagine.
It’s not enough, but my thanks to you, the present military and all those who never got to see these later days.
To God be the Glory.

On the proposed Corporate Average Fuel Economy bill:

If the proposed bill becomes law, CAFE standards would rise to an average of 35 MPG in 2020 for cars, SUVs, minivans, and light trucks, defined as pick-up trucks, from levels of 27.5 MPG and 22.2 MPG for cars and light trucks respectively. Standards would rise 4% annually between 2020 and 2030. One blogger wrote about his beloved engine as “RIP V8.”

The first CAFE standards, according to a 2002 National Research Council study, resulted in 1,300 to 2,600 more Americans killed on the roads in 1993, a typical year, because cars were lighter. If any pharmaceutical product had killed that many patients the manufacturer would be bankrupt. Families can sue Merck, but not Uncle Sam.

After dead motorists, the biggest losers from higher standards would be Americans who prefer large vehicles to carry families, equipment, and pets on daily trips or long vacations.

Other major losers would be the domestic car manufacturers, GM, Ford, and Chrysler, who have invested in plants that make large sedans and light trucks, Americans’ preference. The industry is already restructuring to try to reduce labor costs; higher CAFE standards would be its nail in the coffin.

For several years, Americans have bought more light trucks, including SUVs, than passenger cars. Domestic companies have the bulk of light truck sales — which would bear the brunt of more CAFE.

Daughter drives a small car and, once she has it loaded down with an infant’s car seat and a child’s car seat, all the room in the back is filled. The trunk has the stroller and diaper bag which leaves hardly any room for groceries. She likes the gas mileage but will need to move to something with more room, either a minivan or an SUV, within the year.

I would really prefer if the government would stop making these edicts. If the price of gas is perceived as too high, consumers will make the decision to buy smaller, lighter, more dangerous cars on their own but if they need a bigger vehicle because they have five children, they should have that option.

I’m Loving This

May 24th, 2007 at 1:08 pm . by el nuko

hillary.gifLast week’s under-the-radar report from the St.Pete Times sparked my curiosity.

I looked around the polling sites to see if Hillary might be in trouble, speculating that Howard the Dean might be trying to curry favor with the Clintons by scuttling the Florida primary — even before the voting started. But, the only results I found showed Hillary with a double digit lead, so I slapped myself on the wrists for doubting the electoral veracity of the donks, and moved on to the next story.

Guess what? RCP has a new poll showing the Silky Pony leading in Florida. I kid you not.

If any of the Democrat candidates decide to exploit it Obama has given them an opening to question his Mr. Clean image. He is so focused on taking his home state here in Illinois that he convinced the legislature to move to an earlier primary voting date. But he does not have that kind of muscle by himself. So he was seen earlier in the year confabbing with the two people who do have that kind of clout in the State of Illinois government, the Governor Rod Blagodabitch and the Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daly. Both are best know for crooked administrations but Obama had to cozy up to them to increase his political clout.

We got rain this evening, more than we had gotten in a month! I ran outside to check to see how much had fallen, and it was about 3/10 of an inch. I scuffed the dirt, and only the very top layer was wet. Underneath was just dust. The rain hadn’t penetrated enough to get to the roots of the grass, let alone the trees.

I can only hope that heavier rain fell to some purpose on the massive wildfire in Georgia/Florida (mostly Georgia) which got away from the firefighters a few times today. (No, the fires have not gone away; they continue to burn and will continue to burn until the area gets about 20 inches of rain, preferably all at once.) The fire that got away and raced through about 10,000 more acres was the “80% contained” Sweat Farm Road fire portion, so it will be interesting to see the updated maps tomorrow or the next day. That one big wildfire is @500,000 acres in size now, or almost 800 square miles.

The French Watergate

May 24th, 2007 at 11:20 am . by el nuko

Welcome readers from “The News Is NowPublic”chirac.jpg

On June 16, the former President of France will no longer have his Presidential immunity. He is subject to a number of corruption investigations dating back through 12 years of his Presidency, all the way back to his days as Mayor of Paris, and he is certain to be asked about a secret £30 million account in Japan. Recently seized files at the home of a senior spy confirm the existence of the account.

The Scotsman has the story:

The alleged evidence was discovered by judges Jean-Marie d’Huy and Henri Pons after they seized 112 bound files and numerous other documents from the home of Gen Rondot in connection with their inquiry into an alleged smear campaign. Dubbed “The French Watergate”, it centred on whether Dominique de Villepin, the then prime minister, had asked Gen Rondot to dig up dirt on Mr Sarkozy, then interior minister, who had been wrongly accused of receiving kickbacks from the £1.4 billion sale of French frigates to Taiwan in 1991.

Linkfest Haven, the Blogger's OasisClaims of Mr Chirac’s secret nest egg first came to the attention of the French authorities in 1996 when his friend Shoichi Osada, a Japanese banker, decided to invest £500 million in France, so triggering a routine investigation by the DGSE, which is said to have stumbled upon the then president’s Japanese account.

Thrown into a panic, Mr Chirac is said to have summoned Gen Rondot in 2001 and ordered him to destroy all DGSE evidence of the account. Unfortunately for the president, the spy simply removed the notes and memos about the affair to his home, where they were seized in March last year by Mr d’Huy and Mr Pons. Since then, the judges have been discreetly pursuing an investigation, interviewing 20 intelligence officers about the affair.

Mr Chirac is reported to have struck a deal with Mr Sarkozy, whereby the latter will push through judicial reforms ensuring the ex-president escapes prosecution. However, the magistrates are expected to move before the reforms are passed this summer.
