Arson investigators are at the scene of a small fire at a church in Jackson where vandals have spray-painted racial slurs on the outside of the building.

Crews were called out to the fire at the Middlebrook United Methodist Church at 115 Maddox Road just before 8 p.m.

Jackson Fire Department Chief Arson Investigator Greg Travis said the fire is being treated as an arson. He said he believes the graffiti and the fire are related.

No arrests have been made.

Scientists finger Marburg virus culprit: Fruit Bats!

Hat tip Mike C at Gulf Coast Pundit.

If you haven’t time to pull up the link and read the whole thing, here is an excerpt:

PARIS (AFP) - Scientists reported Wednesday that they had finally fingered the culprit in the spread of Marburg virus, a singularly lethal disease that has baffled virologists for nearly four decades: the African fruit bat.

The researchers from Gabon and the United States examined over 1,100 bats from ten species, but detected the virus’ RNA genome and antibodies only in Rousettus aegyptiacus, a common fruit bat found all across sub-Saharan Africa.

Marburg and its deadly cousin Ebola virus have caused large outbreaks with extremely high fatality rates — 80 to 90 percent — in humans and great apes.

No vaccine or drug therapy has proven effective in warding off or curing the disease, which causes horrendous symptoms including internal bleeding, high fevers, coma and renal failure.

Death from shock usually occurs a week after clinical onset of symptoms.

I checked, and the US does not allow importation of fruit bats.

Several live animals, including but not limited to the fruit bat, mongoose, walking catfish, and java sparrow, may not be imported because they are deemed to be harmful to the environment, to people, or to animals and plants in the United States. This prohibition applies to animals in captivity, including pets, but does not apply to domesticated dogs, cats, or rabbits. Many
States also have strict prohibitions against the introduction of non-native wildlife.

Uh, hello. How about outlawing the importation/ownership of all exotic “pets” to prevent things like the boa constrictors and possibly anacondas slithering about in South Florida? Giant cat-eating lizards lounging about throughout south Florida? Cane toads?

Captain’s Journal: Operation Alljah and the Marines of 2nd Battalion, 6th Regiment. Good article.

Excerpt: Lt. Col. Mullen: Well, to help clarify, many times MNF-W identifies attacks or kinetic events as happening in Fallujah, but they mean the Fallujah area. There has been a great deal going on in the smaller towns outside of the city to curtail enemy activities out there and keep them from trying to return to the city. We have had some small events in the city, but overall, it has been very quiet. The latest big event we had was on June 2nd when we conducted a raid with the police that killed 7 enemy, captured 8, found two truck bombs before they went off, IED making material and other enemy supplies. Three of the dead enemy had suicide vests on and they were killed before they could set off the vests. This was a great operation based off of intelligence that the police had gained. We have also been conducting quiet little cordons and searches on houses based off of more tips from the civilian population and are picking off the enemy one or two at a time. They never fight when we do this because we are too strong for them and this is having a serious demoralizing effect on the enemy. We had a serious sniper problem in the city when we first took over and it is gone for all intents and purposes now. We detained 11 suspected snipers and killed two. They now operate well away from the city. As for the awakening, that is more of a tribal thing. Tribes have little influence inside Fallujah because of how mixed up the population is. They are all solidly against AQI though, because they want nothing to do with their extremist agenda and are appalled by the tactics AQI is using. As just one example, in an area NE of the city, AQI herded 12 women and children, all relatives of a prominent area Sheik who had declared himself against AQI, into a building and blew it up on them killing them all. That is the type of rabid dog enemy we all face out here. They are cutting off their nose to spite their face and the average Iraqi wants nothing to do with them.

In Their Own Words: Newly translated writings of the al Qaeda leadership.
Will this convince anybody that the ultimate goal of Islam is death or conversion of anybody not Islamic? Probably not.

So too with other Western notions such as tolerance and “dialogue,” which bin Laden correctly asserts are “built on Western conceptions, which themselves rest upon the most loathsome, secular principles.” Indeed, bin Laden has a strong case, for he appeals for evidence to the life and practices of Mohammed and his companions — along with the Koran the Muslim’s guide to every aspect of life — and asks sarcastically, “What evidence is there for Muslims for this [dialogue and shared understanding]? What did the Prophet, the companions after him, and the righteous forebears do? Did they wage jihad against the infidels, attacking them all over the earth, in order to place them under the suzerainty of Islam in great humility and submission? Or did they send messages to discover ‘shared understandings’ between themselves and the infidels in order that they may reach an understanding whereby universal peace, security, and natural relations would spread — in such a satanic manner as this?”

History shows that bin Laden has the better understanding of Islam than do Western apologists; as Ibrahim summarizes the argument, “‘radical’ Islam is Islam — without exception.” In this same vein, Zawahiri argues in his “Loyalty and Enmity” that the only relationship one can have with the infidel is enmity. Zawahiri buttresses this argument with numerous quotations from Islamic theology, the most important coming from the Koran 60:4: “‘We disown you and the idols which you worship besides Allah. We renounce you: enmity and hate shall reign between us until you believe in Allah alone.’” On this authority comes the necessity to wage jihad against the infidel.

Read it all, and buy the book.
