The Club for Growth: slouching towards irrelevance

January 3rd, 2008 at 10:50 pm . by el nuko

Over the next few days, we will hear a great deal about the meaning of the Iowa Caucuses, as pundits and bloggers will sift through the demographic data to interpret trends, and voter preferences. There were two obvious winners. There were several losers.

The Big Loser tonight in Iowa: The Club for Growth.

I’ve written quite a bit about The Club for Growth’s ongoing jihad against Mike Huckabee.

With each salvo launched by Pat Toomey and the Club for Growth, the Huck has seemed to gain additional momentum. Each time a new “White Paper” has been released (there have been three so far) the level of skepticism towards CfG has grown. Among a large portion of the conservative coalition, the Club for Growth is no longer viewed as an honest broker. After spending upwards of $700,000 in attack advertising with the stated aim of derailing Huckabee, and future buys pending in Carolina, Huckabee went from low single digits in the polls to this solid victory in the opening act of the 08 election.

Toomey will, no doubt, claim that the message just isn’t getting out, and will order his troops to increase the volume, exaggerations, demonizations, polarizations, and continue the promotion of small-tent conservatism that continues to drive the Club towards irrelevance. In fact, I noticed today over on the CfG blog that they were still looking for reasons to explain Toomey’s primary loss to Arlen Specter.

This time? “Did Specter break the law to beat Toomey?

Last time? Well, Toomey blamed it on Stephen Moore’s lack of managerial acumen, despite the Club for Growth spending over a million dollars in negative advertising aimed at Specter.

After his election defeat, Toomey was able to build alliances on the Board in order to force out Moore and the rest of the brainpower that was originally responsible for the rise, relevance, and prominence of the Club for Growth.

There is only one reason Toomey was unable to beat Specter: Pat Toomey executed a poor strategy. Sooner or later, Steve Stephens and the rest of the big boys on the CfG Board are going to realize that Toomey’s execution during this election cycle has been equally poor. Frankly, I haven’t seen any really good stuff from CfG since the “Blowing in the Wind” ad.

Hopefully, along with that realization will come the affirmation that social conservatives are their allies, not their enemies. I’d love to see them go after the Democrats with the same fervor that they’ve gone after Huckabee. Oh, and while y’all are at it, how about using some of that supposed expertise to do a fair critique of The Fair Tax?

“the greatest campaign finance scandal in American history”

greatest-campaign-finance-scandal-in-american-history.jpgNow that this phrase has been published by a respected member of the MSM, and, as such, is now in the LexusNexis search database, it seems appropriate to associate that phrase with the person to whom it refers: Hillary Rodham Clinton.

I received a ping from FReeper “Spirit of Allegiance” this morning which pointed to an article which featured our pal, “Dougfromupland.”

The article was in the San Francisco Chronicle’s on line edition. Here is the introductory paragraph of the article about “the greatest campaign finance scandal in American history.”

In his other life, Douglas Cogan, 59, is a San Bernardino County commercial real estate broker. But for years, the conservative Republican has spent thousands of hours painstakingly researching what he calls “the greatest campaign finance scandal in American history” by a woman he calls one of the most dangerous political figures the country has ever seen - Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Since it appears that Google has enabled “google-bombing” again, I thought it might be interesting to get the phrase, “the greatest campaign finance scandal in American history,” permanently associated with Hillary Rodham Clinton. That is the purpose of this post. And, if any of you bloggers out there want to join in, just copy+paste this post at your blog, or pass it along in the comments section of your favorite blogs. The more the merrier. I’m going to track-post it to Linkfests, and post it at FR and Hannity. I’ll also activate every tag I have ever used to associate it with this post. Heh.

Reno, baby!

I mentioned to Mrs. Nuke that there was a big Conservative Shindig coming up in Reno in a couple of months, and wouldn’t she like to come with me.

“Hmmm, Reno? Oh yeah!”

So, I think we’re going to CLC in October.

Why?

I believe that it’s important for the conservative message be heard by as many people as possible. I believe it’s important for it be communicated in a compelling and inspiring way. I believe conservatism, and the conservative political movement is truly the last best hope for liberty, freedom, justice, and the rule of law.

Further, with regards to the New Media, the political right is getting its head handed to it by the left. CLC will be a watershed event to learn to use these powerful tools effectively.

The political left owns the internet like the right owns talk radio.

You may not agree with that statement, and the fact is, most of the right blogosphere doesn’t even realize it, much less have a clue as to why or how it happened. My own trip down the web 2.0 rabbit hole began in earnest about a year ago after reading an excellent article from Robert Cox, and came to fruition after a post from this blog was picked up by BBC’s “The Reporters.” How could a small political blog in the right blogosphere be picked up by an international news organization (which generated some staggering hit counts, btw)? The answer to that question illuminated the theme of Cox’s article for me. It was truly a “Eureka” moment.

So, I think we’re going to do everything we can to be in Reno in October. I hope you can too. Read the rest of this entry »

Yes, We’re Open

Many boxes have been unpacked, many yet to go.

Couple of housekeeping issues:

I was able to transfer all of the content from the old site except for categories, authors, and comments. So, I arranged for blogbackuponline to transfer the comments on the post itself, rather than in the comments section. I know it’s tacky, but I couldn’t find a work-around other than leaving the comments behind, which I didn’t want to do.

Second, the categories and authors presents a tougher issue. I want to be able to accredit each author with their work, so I will probably have to go back and re-enter the category tags on those posts, and include the author’s name as a category. That way, you will be able to access each author’s work with a click, without having to go back to the old site to retrieve it. It’s going to take a while, and I ask for your patience.

Also, I am excited to be at Conservablogs.com. I enjoy a challenge, and having so many talented and worthy writers in a single shop is challenging, indeed™. Kind of gets those competitive juices flowing, if you know what I mean. Thanks VH and Tammi for blazing the path, and for your encouragement and friendship. And, thanks Eric for the opportunity, and for the technical support.

Finally, in a giant suck-up to the powers that be at Conservablogs, I would like to draw your attention to a major shindig October 11 - 13 in Reno, The Conservative Leadership Conference. Check out this link, and while you’re there, if you know of a worthy conservative blogger *ahem* that you would like to nominate for Blogger of the Year, such as one who was actually ranked #1 in the world by Technorati, well then you might want to do them the honor of nominating them and saying some nice words, etc.
