Where else but from the New York Slimes?
HAVANA, May 1 — The throngs were out in the streets with their red shirts and banners just as they always are on May Day, but Cuba’s holiday honoring workers came and went Tuesday without their longtime leader ever showing his face.
Many of the hundreds of thousands of people who marched through Revolution Square in Havana craned their necks toward the huge podium along the parade route to see if Fidel Castro would make his first public appearance since undergoing emergency surgery nine months ago. Read the entire article…
Maybe it’s just me, but this slimes reporter seems to be in love with Mr. Castro. It seems like an awfully long article for the term communist to only be used once.
With any luck, the communist dictator is 6 feet under. One can dream ….

Hi Martin,
Yes, it would be ashame to ruin the health care system in Cuba! It appears that wonderful system isn’t even good enough for Castro himself, since he needs doctors from Spain to care for him.

I’ve spoken to a few Cuban’s and they’ve filled me in on the correct procedure should Mr Castro pop his clogs. Castro Jnr wouldn’t take over the presidency (even though he’s already doing it in effect). The prime minister would become the president by default until such time as a presidential election takes place. Yes, they do have presidential elections in Cuba! Trouble is, the majority of the voting power lies directly with the communist party (not that you’re allowed to be anything other than a communist), hence Castro always having won since the revolution. The expectation is that Castro Jnr or one of the Guevarra’s clan would pick up the presidency, much to the disliking of the US, who would then ‘peacefully’ invade (they already illegally occupy Guantanamo), and install a more american friendly regime, turn Cuba back into the US colony it once was, probably ruin the healthcare system, but resolve many of the other economic and infrastructural problems.

I look forward to reading that blog in the future MZ. Personally, I don’t have any better expectations with his brother in charge. Possibly, the people might try a revolt if they ever learn of the dictator’s death? It will be interesting. Communism just sucks the life out of citizens so bad … and these citizens really know nothing else. (I almost just said that communism sucks — which it does)

or close to being so! Though the future after fidel is gone lies uncertain. What do you think will happen with his brother in charge? any ideas? My husband was in cuba in march. we here in the states know they are backward… but seriuosly EVERYTHING is backward. Some of their laws are so plainly absurd. I need to share them on my blog sometime.
