Today (actually yesterday by the time I get this posted) we went to Jackson Lake Lodge for breakfast and then decided to take in Yellowstone while we still had Tieki Rae home. We made a big loop — going in the south gate and out the east gate and then back home through Cody. We drove 500 miles, but had a great time.
We took these stunning photos ourselves — no professionals were involved:)

Thanks Steve,
Surprisingly, our winters are not too bad here. I grew up in Southwest KS where you could get 3 inches of snow and have 10 - 12 foot drifts as a result of it. There are many parts of WY where the winter is harsh, but in the place we live, the wind doesn’t blow much and we can get 12 inches of snow that just comes straight down. It’ll stack up on a chain link fence. There are many days when it is 0 degrees, but it doesn’t feel as cold as a 21 degree day in KS with the wind blowing. The weather is really the best part of living here. No humidity in the summer — you can really get by without A/C no problem.

Wy, these are great shots. I guess you live in a beautiful part of the country (well maybe not in the winter with my thin blood). Congrats on your family time. It looks great…………..Next Stop Lauderdale

Mrs. C.,
Tieki hit the nail on the head; flickr is a very user friendly site for managing your pics (most of the pics you see on my blog are via flickr). When I first signed up, I didn’t think it would be all that big of a deal, but then I discovered that placing pics into blog posts was a very easy thing to do (just have to make sure to use the “image source” for the image and then link the image to the image page).
There is supposed to be a way to blog the pic directly from flickr, but I’ve yet to get that to work. However, Wordpress does have a very cool sidebar widget that lets you display your latest pics on flickr in the form of an RSS image feed (much like the latest posts/comments).
Also, if you use Firefox (the best internet browser in the world wide web), there is a cool add-on that lets you upload a bunch of pics at a time (rather than the limit of six on your flickr account; see my Firefox Users and Seekers page for details)
Tieki,
Bubba’s!?!?!?!? You were right next door to my day job (though I was probably already gone, depending on when you stopped to dine).

Hi DI,
LOL! Wow! That sounds like quite the adventure:) . Is your wife willing to do something like that again? I’ve heard other funny rental car stories — and would certainly steer clear of purchasing one ![]()

Good stuff, Tammi. I haven’t been out to Yellowstone for about eight years. The pics take me back and look so familiar and inviting.
Last time I did, the little woman and I flew into San Jose and rented a car. We went on a 5400 mile northwestern US tour that lasted three full weeks and then we flew out of Las Vegas. We took only camping equipment, which we stored in the trunk of the renter. If Hertz saw where I drove their car (me daddy showed me how to manipulate a ‘55 Bel Aire through back country when I was just a little brat) they would have blacklisted me permanently! I have numerous pictures in the mountains at serious elevation on single lane shelf roads.
One night in northern Idaho, we camped on a summit in the Saw Tooth range that we drove up 12.3 miles of shelf road and crossed two complete washouts to get to. One washout required straddling both ditch sides with six or eight feet of air under the car for almost .6 mile! It gets your blood pumping!
Never, NEVER buy a used rental car!

Hey Mom, Sweet pics - even if you are breaking a few rules.
Anyway, Flickr is actually pretty cool. MZ taught me an easy way to use Flickr to post pictures with different sizes and stuff. I don’t know, it’s just really user friendly.
And Scott, we didn’t exactly “sneak” through Cody on purpose! I think the whole Yellowstone trip was sort of last minute. We weren’t sure if we were going to head down to Jackson or up to Yellowstone.
And leaving the Cody way was just an added bonus — hello Bubba’s BBQ! ![]()

Oh Scott you make me laugh. I’m glad the final two pictures loaded for you today
.
What would a Flickr account do for me? I have photobucket, but not a big fan. Let me know when you get dialed in ![]()

More pictures??? Hmmm, you need a Flickr account
After wrestling with Tieki I can imagine your husband being tired (and 500 miles is quite a distance; know that from many a trip to and from Denver).
Today all the pics actually loaded without the connection timing out (good ol’ dial up
), so I never noticed what appeared to be “a cheap shot ” until today.
Regarding the East Gate, particularly Sylvan Pass: yes, the construction has been going on for many years now. It did suffer a couple of set backs two years in a row a while back; one summer there was a fire that went tearing through there (came to within a mile of leaving the Park) and the following year there was a mudslide that forced the pass to be closed for a week while the roadbed was rebuilt.
This is the first summer since construction that the gate is open 24/7. In the past, it was on an 8-8 operation–actually the way this season started off–and there were still other times that they had the gate open in two six hour windows and closed in two six hour windows.
May, early to mid June, August/September are indeed the best times for playing tourist. In ‘98, we took my birth mom (who had never been up here) to Yellowstone and we saw a whole bunch of buffalo calves (this happened to be the season after NBC was in Gardiner, MT griping about all the ranchers popping off the buffalo–which had brucellosis–that left the north side of the park). Amazing what happens when the herds are purged.
It just dawned on me that 1) I started typing this and forgot to finish, and 2) that you got to travel down the proposed “predator status” boundary line (and yes, just like your daughter, you reminded me yet again, that I have a post to do about that….)

Hi LC,
I think that June and September may be the best times to visit the park. Supposedly, July and August are pretty busy and the traffic is terrible. Also, in the fall is nice because you can see and hear the elk bugling.
If you like the great outdoors, Yellowstone is a great vacation!
