Trees in Trouble!

73b546306ae54d9e8725732800801daa_thumb.jpgBecause we have been to Yellowstone fairly recently, I can attest to the validity that many trees are dying. But I couldn’t help but giggle just a little bit when I read that global warming is playing a role in this disaster. Remember the good ol’ days when El Nino was to blame for all that went wrong?

From the Casper Star Tribune:

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK — A history of fire suppression, an invasive fungal plague, and rampant insect infestation fueled by global warming add up to likely extinction for the whitebark pine and serious trouble for the grizzly bear and other species that depend on it, some scientists say.

“This is not your ordinary pine tree,” said Diana Tomback, a professor of biology at the University of Colorado-Denver, one of the nation’s leading experts on whitebark pine. She stood before a whitebark pine tree in the high country of the greater Yellowstone ecosystem. Click for the rest of the article …

Just for fun, I’m dedicating this little post to some friends who head up the Global Warming Resistance. With any luck, if leftards start leaving comments full of scientific mumbo jumbo, they’ll ride to my rescue. Though, it doesn’t look as though the leftards have found my new address yet. Give ‘em time.

Everybody needs a good scapegoat. It’s Biblical and everything! And Global Warming makes a terrific one-size-fits-all scapegoat for the Greens.

Wait, I thought that global warming was good for the trees. They need carbon to live. The current atmosphere, thanks to Al Gore’s house, is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for our barked friends.

Now, pray tell, how many trees are ideal for Earth? What is the ideal temperature? Ideal amount of carbon production so our tree friends are not subsisting on a meagre diet?

    “All you can eat buffet.”

    Good one!

Wow! You guys are fast. :) I was just getting Comment of the Week ready to go out tomorrow and came back and here you are! Now, did El Nino cause Global Warming or did Global Warming cause El Nino? Kind of like the chicken and the egg. ;)

Re: the chicken and the egg, the chicken came first (see Genesis 1-2)

Hmmm, Global Warming vs. El Nino. Lets see, global warming is caused by greedy SUV-driving Americans; Spanish was around before said evil people, but since recreational enthusiests (environment destroyers) caused global warming, then it’s obvious that global warming begat El Nino.

The chicken is right Scott! And you have solved the GW vs. El Nino question. :)

    Thanks Grit!
I really think this would be an ideal opportunity for you to take a trip to the beautiful Yellowstone National Park to do some research for your blog. Heck, you could make it tax deductible! :)

    Hi Tammi,

The only interest I have in Yellowstone is the trout :) Unfortunately, my wife does not share this calling, so, unless my latest lottery ticket pays off big time, I don’t, sadly, see that destination in my future. Still, one can dream…

    Hi Grit,
Have you mentioned to your wife that Global Warming might soon cook all the trout in Yellowstone before you get a chance to catch them? If that doesn’t work, best of luck in the lottery. ;)
