Gunman Kills Eight, Then Kills Himself, at Omaha Shopping Mall

We need to pray for the people in Omaha — especially victims and relatives of victims.

UPDATE: Very strange coincidence. I heard Debora Maruca-Kovac, a surgical nurse at Nebraska Medical Center, being interviewed by some guy on CNN before we left for church tonight. Funny thing, she forgot to mention that, “Oh by the way, the kid who shot these people today has been living with my family over the last year.” The CNN guy had no clue when he had her on the phone earlier. Typical homicidal maniac:

Though he had his troubles, Hawkins was gentle and loved animals, Maruca-Kovac said.

But he also had a drinking problem and would occasionally smoke marijuana in his bedroom, she said. Hawkins liked to listen to music and play video games “normal teenager stuff,” she said.

“He was a very helpful young man, but he was quiet,” Maruca-Kovac said. “He didn’t cause a lot of trouble. He tried to help out all the time. He was very thankful for everything. He wasn’t a violent person at all.”

Call me cynical, but I don’t believe a word of it.

UPDATE: HotAir has a thread going on the incident

UPDATE 2: I enjoy this blog and PTG has a great post regarding this tragedy. Sample:

I don’t understand why any self-respecting citizen would let a store or mall policy take away their natural right to self defense by force of arms, whether such right is deemed guaranteed by the US Constitution or not. I‘ll not be reduced to “huddling in a corner” as David Codrea at War on Guns describes today’s victim’s plight.

One armed citizen, with a love of something other than just him or herself, could have given one or more of the victim’s families the best Christmas gift they could have ever unknowingly wished for. Instead each of these families will never have another real Christmas for the rest of their lives.

Let us pray… for the re-emergence of sanity.

    Hi DI,
You speak the truth. Have you had a chance to read Tieki Rae’s post at Haemet?

Thats all we need is an amped up untrained armed citizen with a weapons permit. Having been a victim of a armed citizen allows me to have a great life confined to this wheelchair. Seems that you all think you have all the answers. You don’t. I have to commend the landlady for opening her home and trying to help. No way she could have discovered what the state of Nebraska could not discover in 4 years of jail time. You hayseeds need to get a life and move on. This crap happens and you carrying a gun would not have helped. You probably would have run to the restroom and hid like the pansies you are.

    Hi Mike,

I’m fairly skeptical and think you are probably lying about being confined to a wheelchair thanks to an armed citizen. If not flat out lying, you are definitely leaving out key parts to the story, but whatever.

Why leave a comment here instead of here? Probably because you’re just groupie of the Brady bunch.

Free citizens have the right to keep and bear arms. Subjects of The State do not. Mike, millions of Americans wield deadly weapons everyday and cause many, MANY more deaths incidents where people are confined to wheelchairs than are the result citizens with firearms. Of what deadly weapons do I speak? I speak of cars! Would you advocate banning cars or the wheel Mike?

    Hi Richard,
I think I am going to ban cars for myself for the day. :) We just returned from a 3000 mile Christmas trip.

Thanks for stopping in and commenting. I think I’ve tried to comment over at your place and experienced some sort of glitch. Granted, it was probably my own fault, and who knows? It’s a new year, I might get it figured out!

    Happy New Year Richard!
