Ghassan Elashi’s Sentencing Proves CAIR’s Terror Ties

Defeating CAIR is not only desirable it is essential and doing so really comes down to demystifying it.

Until decision makers are made to realize the group’s origins, philosophy, terror ties and the unbelievably obvious manipulation of process it employs - using foreign funded legal assault teams to take advantage of constitutionally guaranteed freedoms in an effort to ultimately destroy them - we are essentially defenseless against the group’s continuing jihad.

The CAIR-Terror Connection @ Front Page News

In September of 2001, just following the worst terrorist attack ever suffered in modern history, CAIR placed on its website, under a picture of the World Trade Center in flames, a plea for donations. It read, “Donate to the NY/DC Emergency Relief Fund.”

Yet, when people clicked on the link, it did not take them to any NY/DC Emergency Relief Fund. No, it took them straight to the website of the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, an Islamic ‘charity’ that was soon to be shut down by the United States for “raising millions of dollars annually for HAMAS.”

The fact that CAIR was toying with the emotions of persons wanting to give money to a fund that CAIR disguised as one related to the 9/11 attacks is despicable…The fact that CAIR was asking people to donate to an organization that was raising millions for a terrorist organization that regularly sends suicide squads to murder innocent people is reprehensible. Under the right circumstances, it would also be criminal…but that is a determination for the appropriate authorities to make, after their (much delayed, and much needed) investigation commences.

Later that month, on September 25, 2001, CAIR changed the link to explicitly ask persons to “Donate through the Holy Land Foundation.” And in addition, CAIR added a new link to its site, soliciting persons to “Donate through the Global Relief Foundation.”

The Global Relief Foundation, like the Holy Land Foundation, was soon to be shut down by the U.S. government on terrorism related charges. As stated by the Treasury Department, “The Global Relief Foundation has connections to, has provided support for, and has provided assistance to Usama Bin Ladin, the al-Qaeda Network, and other known terrorist groups.”

At the time of the Holy Land Foundation’s closure, on December 4, 2001, CAIR immediately took the Holy Land Foundation link off of its site. And less than a week after the Global Relief Foundation’s December 14, 2001 closure, CAIR removed that group’s link as well.

The question we now have to ask is, “Did CAIR know that these organizations existed as terrorist related entities, prior to CAIR removing the links?” Or, considering CAIR’s connection to both offending organizations, the more appropriate question would be, “How did they not know?”

HOLY LAND FOUNDATION FOR RELIEF AND DEVELOPMENT (HLF) @ Discover The Networks

Suspicious of its terrorist ties, U.S. federal authorities began monitoring the Holy Land Foundation in 1996. On September 5, 2001, federal anti-terrorism agents raided InfoCom Corporation, the company that ran the HLF website. According to defectors from the conspiracy, the HLF web server was used also by the Council on American Islamic Relations, the Islamic Society of North America, the Muslim Students’ Association of the U.S. and Canada, the Islamic Circle of North America, the Islamic Association for Palestine, and American Muslims for Jerusalem. As Islam scholar Stephen Schwartz writes, “All these organizations drew from the common financial and technical pool at HLF. All shared a single administrative and technical contact for the maintenance of the web server. They had been erected as political shells around the Hamas hydra-head represented by HLF.”

In July 2004, federal authorities arrested five former HLF leaders: Shukri Abu Baker (HLF’s co-founder and former President and Chief Executive); Ghassan Elashi (HLF’s co-founder and former Board Chairman and Treasurer); Mohammed El-Mezain (HLF’s co-founder and former Board Chairman); Mufid Abdulqader (the half-brother of Hamas’s supreme political leader, Khaled Mashal); and Abdulraham Odeh (HLF’s former New Jersey representative). In a 42-count indictment, these individuals were charged with providing material support for Hamas terrorists to the tune of $12.4 million over a six-year period, and more than $57 million since the late 1988. Two more ex-officials of HLF, Haitham Maghawri and Akram Mishal, managed to escape U.S. jurisdiction and are considered to be fugitives.

According to the indictment, HLF tried to hide its terrorist-financing activities from American law-enforcement by making a few small contributions to innocuous, non-Palestinian entities while reserving the vast majority of its funds for terrorists. As Shukri Abu Baker told his underlings: “We can give $100,000 to the Islamists and $5,000 to the others.” Another HLF program, masquerading as charitable support for needy families and orphans in Palestinian territories, is said to have channeled money to families whose relatives had been killed or captured while waging jihad; some of them were suicide bombers.

Isn’t this special?

In December 2006, two openly pro-Castro organizations — the Humanitarian Law Project and the Center for Constitutional Rights — jointly petitioned a federal judge to dismiss many of the charges brought against HLF.

The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development

July 27, 2004- The U.S. Justice Department handed down a 42-count indictment against the Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, an organization long suspected of supporting terrorists by funneling money to Hamas. The federal indictment named the Foundation and its top leaders in a conspiracy to provide aid to a terrorist organization and the families of suicide terrorists.

The indictment also charged that HLF provided more than $12.4 million to individuals and organizations linked to Hamas between 1995 and 2001. The group raised a total of $57 million since its incorporation in 1992 but only reported $36.2 million to the IRS, according to the indictment.

Gatherings sponsored by IAP and HLF witnessed some very extreme anti-Semitic and radical pro-Hamas rhetoric. In 1989 in an IAP and HLF sponsored event, a masked man took the stage to praise Hamas, describing the ‘oceans of blood’ it would bring on the Israelis. He also thanked the two organizations, singling them for being early allies of Hamas. Other speakers praised Hamas, and a Hamas banner draped the table from which they spoke. According to The Dallas Morning News, HLF’s leaders claimed that sharing the stage with Hamas activists is not equal to supporting it.

Allow me to add a few notes (and a graph) to the many excellent previous posts on Hamas, CAIR, and the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States. It cannot be re-iterated too often that CAIR is a Hamas spin-off. This has implications both for placing CAIR in the proper context, but also for the new challenge of handling the defacto Hamas mini-state in Gaza.

Musa Abu Marzuq, currently the deputy chief of Hamas’ political bureau, earned his Ph.D. in industrial engineering in the United States. Living in the United States from 1981 to 1992 he worked for Hamas. In 1989 he was elected head of Hamas’ political bureau and after Hamas founder Sheikh Yassin’s 1989 arrest he effectively ran Hamas from the United States (see Terror By Remote Control by Yehudit Barsky, Middle East Quarterly, June 1996.)

While in the United States, Abu Marzuq helped found the United Association for Studies and Research and the Islamic Association for Palestine. The Islamic Association for Palestine (IAP) was Hamas’ U.S. arm. However, in 1994 then IAP President Omar Ahmad advised then IAP PR director Nihad Awad to start a new organization devoted to combating anti-Muslim discrimination in the U.S. Other CAIR leaders, including Rafeeq Jabar and Ibrahim Hooper also had worked for the IAP. CAIR national board chair Parvez Ahmed told more than 200 Muslims and others that federal prosecutors named CAIR and other Muslim groups as unindicted co-conspirators in the case. He said CAIR doesn’t condone terrorism.

“It is an attempt to silence the Muslim community,” Dr. Ahmed said.

Oh really? I thought it was all about your terrorist connections. Let’s pray in this case that it succeeds. Hopefully it is all over but the shouting.
