Ironic Surrealism II

It is not fear that grips me… only a heightened sense of things.

When moving my blog, I did not import from WordPress. I used BlogBackupOnline, where I had previously been backing up my old blog. WordPress importing is to complicated for my not so tech brain. lol

You also may find BlogBackupOnline to be an easier alternative.

I first heard of BlogBackupOnline from Nuke.

If you have a blog and you aren’t sure that your blog provider will always have a backup in case of a crash, head over to BlogBackupOnline pronto. The site is straightforward: Log in, enter information about your blog, and the site diligently backs it up every day (provided that you use one of the 11 supported blogging services–Blogger, Friendster, LiveJournal, Movable Type, Multiply, Serendipity, Terapad, TypePad, Vox, Windows Live Space, or WordPress). The site is also a great tool if you ever decide to move your blog from one platform to another. After you’ve backed up your blog, BlogBackupOnline can bring all of your old entries into the new service

BlogBackupOnline importing worked out fairly well for me.
Upside was that it imported all images and videos. Not a default option, one must tick the corresponding box before initial backup has began. If I am not mistaken, images are not imported from WordPress. Correct me if I am wrong.

However, I did come across one posted video that does not show. I hope it is the only one. I have viewed several posts that were fine in that regard.

Downsides are, posts were duplicated (lots of time spent deleting duplicates), tags/categories need to be added manually ( which sucks big time lol), pages did not come along for the ride (easily added though), comments show, but are added at the bottom of their respective linked posts, not a big deal.

All in all, a fair alternative. Since the main objective of importing content was successful.

Decide for yourselves, which is more important. Tags/categories and comments or the chance to sit back and let BlogBackUpOnline do all the work importing for you.

No software or programming required!

Backing up your blog is free while we are in Beta. 50mb of storage space is allocated per account.

Tips for exporting from WordPress
For reference:

You can export the contents of your blog (posts, comments, categories) in the form of an xml file to your desktop and then import the xml file into the other blog site.

The blogroll links must be separately exported and re-categorized. That means you will have to re-assign them to each link but it’s better than copying and pasting those links yet again. :)

“Quick note about the blogroll. The OPML format doesn’t support categories even though they’ll be there when you do the export. Best bet would be to assign the major category for them when you go to import them as you’re going to have to reassign them afterwards anyway.” (drmike on the wordpress.com forum)

Instructions
Blogroll- If you had links, you can export them out at
`http://mydomain.tld/wp-links-opml.php’ to your desktop (you must change “my domain” to your own url, of course.)

Open that exported blogroll (links) xml file in a plain text editor like NotePad and save as a *.txt file. Be sure you are using a plain ext editor and then import the *.txt file you saved into your new blog at dashboard -> blogroll -> import Links.

Important Note: The blogroll (links) xml file needs to be saved as a *.txt doc in a plain text editor like Notepad. This is because if you were to save it as a text rich text document using for example Microsoft Wordpad or Word (horrors!) those programs would add in all kinds of garbage like fonts and unusual html formatting code that mess will it up.

YW Eric. But I am far from an expert on this topic. I hope it helps some. But I will not be able to answer any real technical questions. lol

Blogroll- If you had links, you can export them out at
`http://mydomain.tld/wp-links-opml.php’ to your desktop (you must change “my domain” to your own url, of course.)

Be sure to replace “mydomain.tld” with your own URL not just “mydomain”. If .tld is not part of your URL.
This would not work for me in Firefox. But IE 7 opened it.
