Groups compare Texas, Pennsylvania immigrant facilities to jails
WASHINGTON — Immigrant families, many with small children, are being kept in jail-like conditions in Texas and Pennsylvania, according to advocacy groups that say the Texas facility is inhumane and should be shut down.
I ask where should they be placed? If not in holding facilities.
“What hits you the hardest in there is that it’s a prison. In Hutto, it’s a prison,” said Michelle Brane, detention and asylum project director for Women’s Commission for Refugee Women and Children.
Why not make use of what we already have at our disposal? What do they expect?
The Pennsylvania center — the Berks County Shelter Care Facility — has about 84 beds and the Texas facility can house up to 512 people. The groups fear that government will expand detentions in similar facilities.
That facility, a former nursing home in Leesport, Pa., about 50 miles northwest of Philadelphia, is “less jail-like,” allowing families to go on field trips and having a better education system for children.
I am all for the children being held to have access to some sort of temporary education. But I draw the line at “family field trips” ‘Hello welcome to your lovely new home. On tomorrows schedule a trip to the city zoo???’
The groups suggested that immigration officials release families who are not found to be a security risk, and said the federal government should consider less punitive alternatives to the detention centers, such as parole, electronic bracelets and shelters run by non-profit groups.
Excuse me is their being a security risk the true root of the issue? No. All illegal immigrants have acted against US law. Security risk or not. Parole? Electronic bracelets? Open shelters? No way Jose’. Who I ask will foot the bill for said electronic bracelets? Parole yes that is the ticket… [roll eyes] Heh. American citizens skip out on parole on a regular basis. We should clog the parole system to account for illegal aliens placed on parole? Brilliant idea. Open shelters run by non-profits needs no outcry from this humble blogger. Self explanatory.
If authorities have gone as far as to deem some not a security risk, would they not have discovered their illegal status? Then could they not be sent back home? Or are they meaning, they will follow the rule of the law and show for hearings? Yes I can picture that easily, of course they would. They can not wait to be deported or be placed in another holding facility till they are finally deported. /sarc An endless spiraling circle.
“Unless there’s some crime or some danger, families don’t belong in detention,” said Ralston H. Deffenbaugh, president of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. “This whole idea of trying to throw kids and their parents in a penal-like situation is destructive of all the normal family relationships we take for granted.”
Is not the act of illegal immigration a crime? Normal family relationships are not classified under being illegal. Correct?
White House press secretary Tony Snow said last week that finding facilities for families is difficult, and “you have to do the best with what you’ve got. “
Exactly. They force our hand when they enter the US illegally. We then are found scrambling, to find somewhere to place them while they remain in limbo as it were. The US does the best it can considering the circumstances. They are after all unwelcome guests. And we all know how put out one can be when an unwelcome guest arrives on our doorstep.
“It’s just a concentration camp by another name,” says John Wheat Gibson, a Dallas attorney representing two Palestinian families in the facility.
Valdez sees the center as a political statement by the government.
“Our country likes to detain people,” says Valdez. “I think it’s backlash for the protests that happened in the spring — like, ‘We’re going to show you that you’re not that powerful.’ It’s about power.”
Think this will shut them up?
Illegal Aliens - Gulags of Mexico
The Gulags, camps for non Mexican migrants illegally in that nation, are uninhabitable for lack of water, the smell of feces, the inter mingling of people with infectious diseases…these center don’t provide the immigrants with mattresses, blankets or materials for them to clean themselves (shower, towel, soap,etc)- lack of sanitary conditions, where the immigrants sleep on the ground. The majority of these immigrants are from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador.
Illegal immigrant rights activists should perhaps direct their energy down Mexico way. Seriously, why aren’t they? Why are they not rioting in the streets of Mexico rallying for immigrants rights?
Luis J. Jimenez for The New York Times
Mexico has its own immigration problems. An illegal immigrant from Cuba, center, in a cell in Tapachula, is among those awaiting deportation.
Migrants are also routinely detained by machete-wielding farmers, who extort their money by threatening to turn them over to the police. So many female migrants have been raped or coerced into sex, the authorities said, that some begin taking birth control pills a few months before embarking on the journey north.

Who also has a video posted here that is worth a look.
And immigrants rights groups have the nerve to call the Minute Men vigilantes? Should we should treat them as Mexican authorities do illegals crossing their southern border?

Brenda Norrell has been a news reporter for 24 years, serving as staff writer for Navajo Times, Indian Country Today.
Since being fired by Indian Country Today in Sept., 2006, after complaining of censorship, her articles have exposed the most censored issues.
Ironically she has not approved a comment, I attempted to post on her article last week. Which I am not able to recall verbatim, but I will give it a shot.
I directed my thoughts toward the condition of the cells as in the image below. The very one she posted.

My words in effect were that the holding facilities are most likely better than what many illegal immigrants are used to back home. Now that may have came off as mean spirited, though there is surely truth behind my statement. Facts are facts…
I also placed the blame on the parents whom come into the US illegally, with their children in tow. They know that they may be caught from the get go. Of course no one cares to be held against their will, illegal acts committed heighten the risks of being captured and detained. That is how the cookie crumbles.
If you commit the act of illegally entering the US in order to pick vegetables, mow grass, or build a deck, and are not a serious criminal threat prone to killing, maiming or raping.
You STILL have entered illegally!
Solution, come in legally. I welcome you with open arms. No need to fear detention facilities.
Counter active approach, entering the country illegally and the likely hood of being held at a detention facility.
Fairly simple really…

“I ask where should they be placed? If not in holding facilities.”
Fields filled with daisies, pixies, and magical unicorns that grants wishes of course. Duh!? The fact you didn’t know that shows you are a right-winger totally insensitive to the needs of criminals…err…I mean undocumented workers.
