Iran protests over Swedish Muhammad cartoon

Iran summoned a Swedish diplomat to its foreign ministry on Monday to protest against a cartoon in a Swedish newspaper depicting the head of Prophet Muhammad on a dog’s body, Sweden’s foreign ministry said.

“Gunilla von Bahr, Sweden’s charge d’affaires, was summoned to the Iranian foreign ministry today where she received a protest from the Iranian government,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Anna Björkander told AFP.

The Iranian government told Von Bahr the cartoon was “offensive to Prophet Muhammad,” Björkander said, refusing to disclose any further details of the meeting.

The cartoon was drawn by Swedish artist Lars Vilks, whose series of drawings of the prophet as a dog have sparked a controversy in Sweden. Several art galleries refused to display the sketches amid fears of angry reactions from Muslims.

The Örebro local newspaper Nerikes Allehanda published one of the drawings on August 18 to illustrate an editorial on self-censorship and freedom of religion.

“The editorial was critical of the fact that so many had turned down Vilks’s drawings for fear of the reactions they would provoke,” Nerikes Allehanda’s chief editor Ulf Johansson told AFP.

On Saturday, a week after the publication, a group of about 60 Muslims held a demonstration outside the newspaper’s office to protest against the publication of the sketch.

The publication of 12 cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad in Denmark’s biggest daily Jyllands-Posten in September 2005 led to violent demonstrations throughout the Muslim world in January and February 2006.

How does Iran find the time to get their panties in a bunch over those drawings? Have they ran out of hanging prospects?

“We, the Moslems around the world, object the insulting pictures of our Prophet Mohammed. We strongly demand removing these pictures from your website and publishing a formal apology to all Moslems around the world,if you are a good man then read about the live of our prophet mohammed, then you can jadge otherwise you have no right to do this, this is a big mistake from you.”

Because , you are worthless person….

A few more examples of Vilks’ drawings. A few more can be found sprinkled throughout his site.

How this story got past my radar I’ll never know.Of course Baron Bodissey of Gates of Vienna has been on top of it from the onset.

Perhaps, two of the most interesting ones being…

An Ironic Rondellhund

Ironically, Mr. Vilks does not recognize the authority of the Swedish government, for he has declared himself the leader of a sovereign state known as Ladonia. In a further irony, his politics seem to be quite traditionally left-socialist, as Conservative Swede points out:

This next one floored me, never thought I would see the day. Literally I am stunned.

Swedish Muslims Will Exhibit the Modoggies

Hooman Anvari himself thinks the drawings are disgusting, but he wants them exhibited anyway.

“The intention is to create a balanced debate on free spech, freedom of religion and democracy. These issues tend to get polarized if one doesn’t handle the debate in a good way.

Although the plot thickens. Hooman Anvari is a professed Secular Muslim and he has announced that he and his group SEMUS have severed all connections to Vilks, the exhibition and any ensuing debate.

The weblog, Secular Muslims in Sweden - SEMUS aims to provide a secular perspective on the debate on Islam in Sweden.
I define myself being secular in the context of The separation of religion and the state and Laicité and not being anti-religion or anti-islamic.

THE EXHIBITION AND DIALOUGE WITH THE SWEDISH ARTIST HAS BEEN CANCELLED

Since Mr Lars Vilks has made an anti-semite sketch which can be viewed on his weblog www.vilks.net SEMUS has decided to cancel all planning for exhibition and dialogue with him. We believe it is not ethical to be involved or associated with Mr Vilks and his art project now and in the future. We have terminated all collaboration with mr Vilks. According to Swedish law, anti-semite and racist sketches could be a case for prosecution.

There is something about this image, (another piece by Lars Vilks) that screams a silent scream.
A deafening, silent truth.

Update: I meant to add this Opus toon. As the story behind it is similarly related to the mo-dog drawings, in a round about way. It was late when I was writing this and I had forgotten.

Silencing “Opus”

We’re proud to host Berkeley Breathed’s “Opus” every week, but especially this week and next: At least 25 of the newspapers that normally print the comic strip, and probably more, have declined these two, at least partly out of fear that Lola Granola’s latest spiritual journey — dabbling in Islam and adopting its conservative dress code for women — could be offensive to Muslims. Sadly, one of the papers that isn’t printing the strip is the Washington Post, though the Post’s syndication service, Washington Post Writers Group, distributes Opus. (The Washington Post actually ran the strip online, though it was hard to find, but not in the paper.) Read more.

Update

Al-Qaeda puts bounties on heads of Swedes

An Al-Qaeda front organization in Iraq has offered rewards to anyone who kills two Swedes behind a cartoon depicting the Muslim prophet Muhammad as a dog, in a statement posted on the Internet.

The self-proclaimed Islamic State in Iraq placed a bounty of at least $100,000 on the head of the cartoonist Lars Vilks and $50,000 on Ulf Johansson, editor in chief of the Nerikes Allehanda newspaper which published the caricature. More here.

Excellent post. I think it is crap how the papers like the Washington Post and others have no problem running cartoons slamming Christians and hide behind the 1st Amendment, but will censor one written about Muslim Fascists. Dark times indeed.

    Hi Infidel sister.

Funny how there were not riots and murders over this

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20408049/

but at least “Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi criticized the action as hurtful and an insult to Christians,”

Luckily because I would have liked to start my own jihad on their hypocrisy.

Welcome back and thank you. Well said. “Piss Christ” and Mother Mary covered in dung are excellent examples of the hypocrisy shown.

In regards to Iran being upset over the mo-dog drawings, I find it outlandish they would even dare to make a peep, considering the inhumane treatment of Iranian citizens.

The drawings by Lars Vilks may be deemed disrespectful of Islam, but they pale in comparison to how Iran treats it’s own people.

For example, Freethoughts has a post up titled, “Islamic Republic of Executions”

    Hiyas Fang

I was a bit surprised at ‘Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badaw’s’ criticism over the cigarette Jesus. But bear in mind Islam considers Jesus as a prophet, so…

  • 5 Fang // Aug 29, 2007 at 8:50 am

Yeah they consider him a prophet when it suits them but good on Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badaw for taking the correct stand.

I agree good on him. To be admired regardless.

Once again in English please. If you are able to that is. Otherwise you are wasting your time.
If by chance, the above comment is a lecture on my posting images of mohammad, it will fall on deaf ears. I do not practice islam, so any rules/guidelines do not apply to me. That is the way the ‘freedom of religion’ ball bounces.

Where in the hell did the last two comments go? One was left by a new visitor ‘Danny Boy’ and the later in which I replied to Danny Boy. Surely I did not mistakenly delete them.

I am half awake but I remember them from yesterday.

The right to ridicule a religion
Now, some really lousy caricatures published in Denmark, have resulted in one art gallery after another refusing to display Lars Vilks’ three drawings. People are afraid that something unpleasant is going to happen.
“I think the drawings are good. But there is also a sense of fear here at the local heritage centre that it will lead to problems and conflict,” says Märtha Wennerström, responsible for the art exhibition in Tällberg (SvD 21/7).
So art galleries are allowing themselves to be frightened by a diffuse threat. They are giving the message that it is easy to be frightened into silence.

The right to freedom of religion and the right to blaspheme religions go together. They presuppose one another.
What happens if a fundamentalist Muslim wants to express his faith through pictorial art? Quite clearly, it will be easy to persuade art galleries that the pictures are unsuitable, that they may lead to conflict. So the restriction of Lars Vilks’ possibilities to express himself may also negatively affect Muslims’ right to express themselves.

I think it is stupid to poke another’s religion in the eye, especially at this crucial time in history, considering all that’s going on. Anyhow, who is to say that cartoon is one of Mohammed? To me, it looks like any arabic looking male. No images of Mohammed are allowed, so who knows what he looks like? Have you met him?

I think it is stupid to poke another’s religion in the eye, especially at this crucial time in history, considering all that’s going on.

Stupid. Heh Rude perhaps. But worth a death threat? HELL NO!

Anyhow, who is to say that cartoon is one of Mohammed? To me, it looks like any arabic looking male.

Good point. Art is in the eye of the beholder, so they say, and is created in the eye of the artist. Art as free expression is nearly as old as mankind itself. Radical islamists who cry like little babies, throw fits worthy of a four year old, meanwhile threatening death and staging violent protests, open themselves to be mocked. The arrogance of Islam to demand that ALL follow their rules is sickening to ALL free minded individuals.

Why should the entire world bow down to Islam? That is what they want. If we give them an inch they will take a mile. Guaranteed! One must either stand up to bullies or be walked on. They must be discredited in order to weaken them.

No images of Mohammed are allowed, so who knows what he looks like?

In Islam. Not in my world. I am not a Muslim. Exactly who does? Image that are said to depict mo are a trivial insignificant matter in, “this crucial time in history, considering all that’s going on”

    Have you met him?

No. lmao Has anybody that is alive today?

    LGF puts it best

“Mockery. Jihadis hate it, a lot. Hence, we must.”

    I’ll close with this quote.

“Iran summoned a Swedish diplomat to its foreign ministry on Monday to protest against a cartoon in a Swedish newspaper…”

Okay. Before we go any further tell me this. Why does Sweden need an ambassador to Iran? HA!

  • 15 Velvet Hammer // Sep 15, 2007 at 12:36 pm

Yeah well good question John. “Iran summoned”

The Iranian government told Von Bahr the cartoon was “offensive to Prophet Muhammad,” Björkander said, refusing to disclose any further details of the meeting.

Velvet Hammer is informing the Iranian government that it is offensive to the the human race!

And AS IF Iran has any room to speak what so ever!

mo art = death threats from the religion of perpetual outrage
iranian human rights abuses = business as usual in the name of islam
