Egypt seizes German magazine over Islam portrayal

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt ordered the confiscation of a special edition of the German magazine Der Spiegel about Islam on Tuesday that the government says insults the Muslim Prophet Mohammad, Egypt’s state news agency MENA said.

Information Minister Anas el-Feki said the decision “comes in the context of defending Islamic values and standing firmly against those who try to insult the prophet, the Islamic faith, and religions generally,” MENA reported.

“We are for freedom of the press, but we cannot permit religions to be insulted,” MENA quoted Feki as saying.

It said that Feki had ordered copies of the March 25 special edition confiscated because it contained “a number of images and phrases insulting the prophet, peace be upon him”.

MENA said that the edition, whose cover it said bore the headline “Allah in the West”, included paragraphs quoting a “German orientalist” as saying that Islam called for violence and terrorism.

MENA said that the magazine had also characterized Islam as a Christian sect.

No one at Der Spiegel was immediately available to comment.

Egypt, the most populous Arab country, is sensitive to any perceived insults to Islam that could sow popular discontent in its conservative society. Cairo is also home to the al-Azhar mosque, a major seat of Sunni Islamic learning.

Egypt summoned the Danish ambassador to Cairo in February to protest against the reprinting of cartoons lampooning the Prophet Mohammad in Danish newspapers, and banned issues of four Western newspapers because they contained the reprints.

Protests and riots erupted in many Muslim countries in 2006 when the cartoons, one showing the Prophet wearing a turban resembling a bomb, first appeared in a Danish daily. At least 50 people were killed and three Danish embassies attacked in a number of Muslim countries.

The Egyptian newspaper Al Fager published the Danish Mo Toons in October of 2005!

Freedom for Eyptians scanned the images from the Oct 17, 2005 edition. He also notes that the editor in chief of Al Fager wrote an article expressing his surprise that the fatal riots have been suddenly being launched after four months.

Egyptian Newspaper Al Fagr had published the Danish cartoons of Mohamed - back in October 2005, in the middle of Ramadan, and nothing happend. There was no outrage, no protests, nothing in the way of a Muslim reaction:

Riots around the world–promoted by Al Qaeda and its sympathizers–have claimed a dozen lives. Jihadists claim to be offended by cartoons of Mohammed that originally appeared in a Danish newspaper. What’s most interesting is to see the timidity of the mainstream media here. The New York Times declines to publish the offending cartoons–but does not hesitate once again to run a photograph of an “artist’s” rendering of the Virgin Mary, done in elephant dung. The Boston Globe and The Los Angeles Times shied away from offending Muslims, but re-published pictures of a crucifix immersed in urine. Editors of The Washington Post sanctimoniously tell us they prefer to “refrain from gratuitous assaults on religious symbols.” Oh, really?

Two days ago the editor in chief of Al Fager Adel Hammouda wrote an article expressing his surprise why this war is suddenly launched after 4 months. He indicates as I said in my previous post that it is politically motivated to hide more corrupt issues behind. And he is not apologizing for publishing the cartoons as the Danish newspaper did. Instead, he is proud his paper was first to publish.

Undoubtedly some of the more extremist fundamentalist types believe it– but as the vast number of images throughout history shows, the prohibition against all images of Mohamed is quite obviously not an inherent part of Islam.

In New York City, where Serrano lived, 400 New York artists held a public rally in support of his work and his right to create and display it. Serrano became a celebrated art world hero.

Each and every single, solitary, Western news outlet should have published the mo toons along side Jyllands Posten from the get go. Then maybe the cartoon controversy would of fizzled out as it should have. How can Western media as a whole not support full ‘freedom of speech’?

Picking and choosing who should have the right to free speech is not free speech!

People! Please! Islam abuses our freedom of speech for their own devious purposes, while simultaneously stripping away the Wests right to free speech. The time for world wide denouncement of Islam has arrived. We can no longer live freely if we are walking on fear of retribution egg shells.

If most of the West cowers down to the Muslim bullies on the block, it will sink further down the the deep dank hole of dhimmitude.

Political correctness is used as a tactical strategic weapon.

A weapon the West places in Islam’s hands, willingly.

STAND UP world leaders in the West and say in unison.

“We are not gonna take it anymore”!, Islam mouth pieces STFU and STFD! If not, you will be accessories guilty of instigating the fall of Western civilization through your gutless lily-livered appeasing & apologizing.
