Will The “Islamic Saudi Academy” Escape Close Scrutiny Unscathed…Again?

Qur’an: Surah Al-i-’Imran Verse 99
Say: “O ye People of the Book! why obstruct ye those who believe, from the path of Allah, seeking to make it crooked, while ye were yourselves witnesses (to Allah’s Covenant)? But Allah is not unmindful of all that ye do.”

Review: Troubling passages in texts at Va. school

Excerpts

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — Textbooks at a private Islamic school in northern Virginia teach students that it is permissible for Muslims to kill adulterers and converts from Islam, according to a federal investigation released Wednesday.

The passages were found in selected textbooks used during the 2007-08 school year by the Islamic Saudi Academy, which teaches 900 students in grades K-12 at two campuses in Alexandria and Fairfax and receives much of its funding from the Saudi government

School officials have long denied that the academy fosters intolerance. It has acknowledged that some of the Saudi textbooks contain harsh language, but says that the texts have improved in recent years and are revised as needed by the academy before being distributed to students.

The commission said it obtained 17 of the academy’s textbooks through a variety of channels, including from members of Congress. The texts did appear to contain numerous revisions, including pages that were removed or passages that were whited out, but numerous troubling passages remained, according to the panel:

_ The authors of a 12th-grade text on Koranic interpretation state that apostates (those who convert from Islam), adulterers and people who murder Muslims can be permissibly killed.

Hyland, who represents the Mount Vernon District of Fairfax County, visited the school following the release of the commission’s report. He told the Chronicle that the textbooks are currently being examined by Arabic-speaking county employees. At this point, he said he has no reason to believe they will find “anything untoward, or anti-American, or anti-non-Muslim,” and is awaiting the results of the translation, which he said could take several months.

In the interview, Al-Shabnan strongly denied that anything in the academy’s curriculum could be construed as being hostile toward Christians, Jews or non-Muslims.
_ The authors of a 12th-grade text on monotheism write that “(m)ajor polytheism makes blood and wealth permissible,” meaning that a Muslim can take with impunity the life and property of someone believed guilty of polytheism. According to the panel, the strict Saudi interpretation of polytheism includes Shiite and Sufi Muslims as well as Christians, Jews, Hindus, and Buddhists.

Islamic Saudi Academy in Virginia: Case Study in Homegrown Radicalization - Counterterrorism Blog

By Andrew Cochran
The new report by the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom on textbooks in use at the Islamic Saudi Academy in northern Virginia leaves little doubt that the Saudi government, which owns the school, and school officials use the school as an incubator for their special brand of Islam among the students, to the rejection of moderate interpretations of the Koran which reject hate speech, polarization, and incitement. Yesterday’s USCIRF report was actually the fourth since 2003 warning that various Tawhid editions of textbooks used by the Saudis in its schools include intolerant language which should be removed (see last year’s USCIRF report, which refers to the other reports).

But I can see millions of Americans rolling their eyes, wondering why it matters. It matters because the ISA textbooks and intolerant culture have acted as an incubator of homegrown terror for years, as seen in the case of Ahmed Omar Abu Ali.

As I reminded readers on May 20, the 1999 valedictorian at the ISA was none other than Ahmed Omar Abu Ali, who was convicted of joining Al Qaeda and plotting to assassinate President Bush. […]

[…]There are no excuses left for the Saudis to maintain the textbooks, which inculcate principles underlying the jihadist culture. The ISA has an incubator for radicalization of otherwise average American Muslims for years, and at this point there is no reason to trust that the Saudis or school officials will remove them. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors should revoke the lease (I assume that the lease includes the standard “termination for convenience” clause in all government contracts). And the State Department should order the school shut down as suggested by the USCIRF.

Islamic Saudi Academy won by unanimous vote. Their lease was approved for yet another year.

Last but not least…
State lets Islamic school operate
Officials say Saudi institute will revise violent textbooks

State Department officials said Thursday they have no plans to close a Saudi-financed Islamic school in Northern Virginia that has failed to eliminate violent and intolerant language in textbooks.

“They told us they would revise the textbooks by the 2008 school year,” State Department spokesman Rob McInturff said. “We don’t plan to take additional action apart from the discussions that have been going on with the Saudi government.”

State Department spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos on Thursday cited the Saudi government’s 2006 acknowledgement of a need to revise its textbooks and agreement to do so “in time for the start of the 2008 school year,” which starts this fall.

“For several years we’ve engaged the Saudi government on the need to eliminate intolerant references toward other religious groups in textbooks and other educational materials used in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere,” Mr. Gallegos said. “And we’ll continue to work with the Saudi government in efforts to revise the textbooks.”

Don’t hold your breath.

So the answer to the title/question is a resounding “yes”.

All emphasis mine.

    Islamic Studies Program
    http://www.saudiacademy.net/html/Curriculum-HighSchool.htm

The Islamic Saudi Academy is a subsidiary of the Ministry of Education for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Hence, it follows the Islamic Studies curriculum which has been set forth by the Kingdom.

The Islamic Studies curriculum is one of the most important subjects taught at the Academy, as it aims to build a strong Muslim student population with strong morals and values. These morals and values will produce young men and women who will succeed in this life and in the Hereafter.
