Barrasso, Enzi Oppose Tax-Funded Abortions

Former Senate competitors, Mike Enzi and John Barrasso (both R-WY) have voted to prevent tax money being spent on international abortion programs. Wyoming Right to Life reports in their newsletter:

Both Sens. Mike Enzi and John Barrasso cast votes against taxpayer funding of abortions. The Senate held three votes last week with two coming on a Bush policy that prohibits tax-funding of groups that promote or perform abortions overseas and another on making sure our nation doesn’t fund programs like the UNFPA that encourages forced abortions.

In all three votes, Enzi and Barrasso voted pro-life.

While the first vote did pass, it is good that the two did not give in on their stances.

The Senate last week voted to overturn a policy President Bush instituted on his first day in office in 2001 that protects taxpayers from funding international abortions. Senators voted to overturn the Mexico City Policy that prevents tax funds from going to groups that promote or perform abortions overseas.

The vote occurred during the debate of the State Department/Foreign Operations appropriations bill for the next fiscal year.

Senator Barbara Boxer, a pro-abortion California Democrat, sponsored an amendment that the Senate approved on a 53-41 vote.

President Bush has already promised he would veto the bill if it nullified his abortion policy.

In 1996, sens. Enzi and Barrasso ran against each other in the Republican primary for the seat now held by Sen. Enzi. In that election, Sen. Barrasso was a pro-abortion candidate. During his time in the Wyoming Legislature, he has moved right on the issue standing for life.
