Park Service Ignores Wyoming (Again)

In spite of concerns from Wyoming, $52 million spent on Sylvan Pass being improved, increased traffic through the East Gate this summer (in spite of construction, fires, and mudslides), and numerous scathing letters citizens and elected officials, the National Park Service has announced the preferred final winter use plan will close Sylvan Pass to over-snow travel starting in the 2008-2009 winter season.

It is speculated that snowmobiling would be allowed to continue in the rest of the park, but details are still pending release.

Snyder and Co. should have known better than to do something this STUPID when the lone Representative is injured:

To say I am disappointed in the Park Service’s decision would be a gross understatement,” Cubin said.

“The closure of the East Entrance to snowmobile use is an attack on Wyoming’s way of life. It will mean the destruction of numerous small businesses and disappointment of recreational users in Park County who depend on the East Entrance.

Most of all, however, I think it’s a violation of several of the Park Service’s core management principles. Why did the National Park Service collect input only to disregard it? It appears the decision was already made before input was taken. […]
In fact, the last time I can remember a management decision this politically fueled being made in the park was when Bruce Babbitt personally reintroduced wolves to the park despite the unified objection of Wyoming’s citizens and elected officials.

Can you say lawsuit pending?
