Romney Gets WYGOP Nod In Spite of Preferences

Go back to just a few days ago when the media wasn’t paying much attention Wyoming Republicans convening across the state. We chose the first delegates in the national nomination process, some for Romney, some for Thompson, and even one for Hunter.
Now, here’s a story that’s sure to get national attention sooner or later. Did we really support Romney??? For example, here in Park County, we chose the Romney delegate (as an alternate, so she’s not part of “the eight”) by default when State Rep. Colin Simpson, supporting Duncan Hunter, withdrew from the final vote. Then we conducted a “straw poll” to determine where our preference was. The result was a six-vote victory for Duncan Hunter. And as it turns out, we weren’t the only county that voted in such a fashion!
- Johnson County Republicans voted for an uncommitted alternate delegate, while giving their preference to Fred Thompson. Romney landed in 4th place in the straw poll.
- Campbell Count’s delegate is a Romney supporter, while Ron Paul was their preference.
- Four other counties voted for the Romney delegate and supported Romney in their straw polling.
And this quote is a charm:
[Ruth] Osborn, a state GOP committeewoman [from Buffalo], said in a telephone interview Monday that people were asking why the national news media were reporting Wyoming voted for Romney when her county’s straw poll gave him fourth place.
“I’ve had several people say to me, ‘Why did it come out for Romney? I’m not in favor of Romney,’” she said.
I have a question too. Why did Freudenthal get reelected in 2006? I didn’t vote for him, and I know a number of other people here in Park County, and in Fremont County too, that did not vote for him. But he got reelected. Why??? I think these disgruntled Romney non-supporters and us Freudenthal non-supporters should contact John Edwards to fight for our cause of not being represented!
Anyways, back to the split-support issue. I’m thinking more of a big deal about this is being made than needs to be. Counties were not required to conduct a straw poll (and some did not), nor were they required to report the results of the straw poll to WYGOP Headquarters in Casper.
A straw poll is what it is. In Iowa this Spring, we just might see people change and support someone other than Huckabee and Obama, thus the delegates in Iowa would be distributed contrary to the desires of their Jan. 3 straw polling. Does that make their results questionable?
