Wyoming Dems Relive “The Good ol’ Days of 1960″

Wyoming has been inundated with political attention this year. Many a presidential candidate has treked through this little state of ours. Six of them were Republicans. None of them are running any more, but it was nice to see them while they were.

Last week, we (as in the collective we, not as in my own eyes at the event) saw Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton peruse the state. On the list of Democrat no-longers, Bill Richardson made a stop in the state last Fall too. Additionally, Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea did some campaigning last week in Wyoming.

While it was big news here, I figured that’s about all it would amount to. Then I woke up to CNN Radio News Saturday morning and  the lead story was Wyoming’s Democrat Caucuses.

While cleaning rooms  later that day, I clicked Fox News on and was surprised to see them crunching numbers and how well Obama could do in this county and Clinton in that County. Laramie County was so full, they needed two rounds of caucusing to accommodate the caucus goers.

So, at the end of the day, Sen. Obama won the caucuses across the state. Congratulations. Just ask Mitt Romney how much it means before you continue on.

And now for a little number crunching of my own. Counties with close calls:

  • Big Horn (by seven)
  • Carbon (by eleven)
  • Crook (tied)
  • Goshen (by twelve)
  • Hot Springs (by nine)
  • Natrona (by seven)
  • Niobara (tied)
  • Platte (by five)

That’s eight out of 23 counties that are really divided. How much attention will Big Media pay attention to it? Probably not much, even though Casper, a Wyoming media center, is in Natrona County. After all, only Republicans are divided.

It should be noted that the delegates awarded in the counties are delegates to the state convention this May. There is where the national delegates will be voted on.
