Last September, Sen. Hank Coe announced that he was giving serious thought to running for Governor in 2010. Given that the seat will be open (provided there is no successful legal challenge to the term limits law), it’s only natural for Republicans to start piling on. Another speculator has announced the possibility…
State Rep. Colin Simpson (R-Cody) was the guest on Speak Your Piece yesterday, guest-hosted by Big Horn Radio Network News Director Wendy Corr. There was a wide range of topics discussed. Among them were Rep. Simpson’s political pursuits. He is completing his fifth term this year, which he has served as Majority Floor Leader. Late last year, He began contemplating a run for the U.S. House, but because of his young family, he decided not to seek that office at this time. It should be noted that he was quite ambitious to succeed the late Sen. Craig Thomas last summer. Next step from here is to run for another (likely uncontested) term and then go for Speaker of the House.
The end of the term to come would be just in time for the 2010 election cycle which features not only legislative seats across the state, but also the five state-wide elected officials.
Rep. Simpson noted that in 2010, the Governor would be term limited, unless the law was challenged and overturned. A similar law for the state legislative branch was overturned in 2004, no one was interested in challenging the state electeds term limits law at that time. He said it could happen in 2010 and Gov. Freudenthal could pursue a third term, but he doesn’t think that he would likely do that.
In the course of the conversation, Rep. Simpson went on to mention that he is giving consideration and thought to running for Governor in 2010. Rep. Simpson is the second currently-serving Park County legislator to announce the speculation of running for Governor in 2010.
