Pro-Life Group Defends Candidate, Endorsement

Wyoming Right to Life President Steven Ertelt recently sent out the following defending the pro-life position held by Cynthia L:ummis and their endorsement of her.

Recently, there has been some question concerning the pro-life views of Republican Congressional candidate Cynthia Lummis. I can say with confidence that we can count on her to have a strong pro-life voting record if she represents us in Washington.

Today’s pro-life movement is filled with millions of people who formerly supported legalized abortion but, after education or personal experiences now support the pro-life position. Like Senator John Barrasso, who ran many years ago as a candidate who backed legal abortions but who has proven his pro-life credentials time and time again since then, Cynthia Lummis has come around on pro-life issues.

Contrary to what a recent letter to Wyoming newspapers has suggested, Cynthia Lummis has told pro-life advocates that she believes abortion violates her Christian views and constitutes a “sin against God.” Many of us spoke with Cynthia earlier this year and came away with a much different impression.

She strongly supports the partial-birth abortion ban, opposes federal funding for abortions, and opposes the bill Barack Obama wants that would overturn every abortion limit our state legislature has enacted. And on every pro-life issue that Congress will vote on, I’m confident she will vote pro-life.

Moreover, Cynthia Lummis opposes making taxpayers fund embryonic stem cell research that involves the purposeful destruction of human life for research that has never cured a single patient.

As is the case with Senator Barrasso, who made his first pro-life vote in Congress one to oppose taxpayer funding of this grisly practice, this is a vitally important piece of information. While pro-life lawmakers in Wyoming and Washington are falling away on this fundamental issue of protecting unborn children, Cynthia has told us she will not support funding this unethical science.

It appears to be easier for some pro-life politicians to vote against the destruction of human life in an abortion center than to vote against the destruction of human life in its earliest stages in a research lab. For a lawmaker to understand the problems with embryonic stem cell research tells me Cynthia “gets it” — that she has at least somewhat of an understanding that human life begins at conception and is worthy of legal protection.

As the president of Right to Life of Wyoming, I support Cynthia’s bid for Congress and the entire board of Right to Life endorses her as well. Cynthia also enjoys the support of Casper Rep. Bob Brechtel, who has spearheaded pro-life efforts in the legislature for many years.

A quick note about the other candidates: Yes, there is another pro-life candidate in the Congressional race — Bill Winney — but most political experts don’t believe he will win and that the race is between Lummis and Mark Gordon. Certainly, if Winney captures the Republican primary nomination, Right to Life of Wyoming would likely endorse him and support him over the pro-abortion Gary Trauner.

Regarding Gordon, should he win the primary, we pro-life people of Wyoming will be in a real pickle.

Gordon has supported pro-abortion candidates financially (including Trauner) and has repeatedly refused to tell us where he stands on abortion or if he will support even modest abortion limits. Unfortunately, dividing the pro-life vote helps candidates like Gordon who appear to care little that 1.2 million unborn children are killed annually and that 2,000 Wyoming women and children become abortion victims every year.

As pro-life stalwarts, we can vote for Cynthia Lummis next week confident she will represent pro-life values in the same way we have been excellently represented by statesmen like Senators Enzi and Barrasso and our late dear friend Senator Thomas.

Right to Life welcomes your questions and input about the candidates in the Congressional race and other election contests. We enjoy serving you and representing your pro-life voice.

Remember to get out and vote on August 19th (or by absentee before then) and vote for Cynthia Lummis!
