Fairfax, Va. - The National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) announces its endorsement of Cynthia Lummis for election to the U.S. House of Representatives in Wyoming on November 4.
“In Wyoming, hunters, sportsmen and gun owners appreciate leadership that respects the Second Amendment,” said Chris W. Cox, Chairman of NRA-PVF. “Throughout her tenure as state senator, Cynthia Lummis has proven her longstanding, steadfast commitment to preserving our Second Amendment freedoms.”
During her tenure as a state lawmaker, Cynthia Lummis was a solid advocate for the right to keep and bear arms in Wyoming. She is a long time supporter in the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms and defend themselves and their families. While serving in the state senate, she also voted to pass Wyoming’s Right-to-Carry law in 1994.
Lummis’ solid pro-gun and pro-hunting voting record has earned her an “A” rating and endorsement from NRA-PVF.
Cox concluded, “The choice is clear. Cynthia Lummis’ strong support for the Second Amendment heritage in our country has earned her the trust and support of NRA members in Wyoming. We encourage our members and fellow hunters and gun owners to vote Cynthia Lummis for Congress on November 4th.”
Upon receiving the endorsement, Cynthia Lummis issued the following statement from Cheyenne:
I am proud to receive the endorsement from the NRA recognizing my commitment to protecting our Second Amendment right to own and bear arms. I have a long and documented history of voting for and supporting gun rights.
I will actively fight and vote against any legislation that proposes gun registration. My Democrat opponent Gary Trauner, however, has stated that he believes the government, having access to purchase records is a common sense approach to balancing gun owner’s rights vs. national security needs.” (NRA Questionnaire released by Trauner Campaign, 9/25/06). I do not believe gun owners should be singled out and placed on a federal government list. Ever.
I also disagree with Mr. Trauner’s view on placing restrictions on gun ownership. He has stated that while it’s important that we preserve our rights he also believes we need laws to ensure the health and safety of ourselves and others around us and he will, “support appropriate and reasonable safety regulations…” (traunerforcongress.com 2006 web site).
Mr. Trauner has told the NRA and Wyoming voters in his 2008 campaign that he supports and will protect the second amendment. He has changed what he says publicly from his 2006 campaign. We already get enough of that kind of ’straight talk’ from Washington, D.C.
Attitudes and views, like those of Gary Trauner, that bend to public opinion like a flag pole in the Wyoming wind will nickel and dime our gun rights out of existence. We must be diligent in our defense of our gun rights and all rights contained in the U.S. Constitution.

Well, the band was playing “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain”… last call was a half-hour ago… the lights are coming up on the dance floor and the NRA is drunk enough so that even John McCain looks like a hot date.
I’m an NRA Life Member, but I’m fed-up with the NRA becoming just another mouthpiece for the GOP.
Bob Barr has an NRA rating of “A+”.. McCain has a “C”… so who do the boys in Virginia endorse? The Republican, naturally.

Dutch, The NRA does endorse non-Republicans. Here in Wyoming, they endorsed the reelection of our Democrat Governor in 2006. I’m sure in other places, other Democrats have been endorsed as well as Libertarians.
Regarding their pick of McCain over Barr, I would imagine that they were looking at the probability of who could get elected. In this case, as much as I appreciate Mr. Barr’s stance, and I’m sure the NRA appreciates his stance as well, he’s not on every state’s ballot, and how well have Libertarian Presidential candidates fared in the elections? At best, they’ve only helped to make it a close call on electing anti-Second Amendment Presidents.
I myself am not a huge McCain fan, but I’ll take him (along with Sarah Palin) over the anti-gun Obama/Biden ticket any day.

Even though Cynthia Lummis received the NRA endorsement, it doesn’t mean that her opponent Gary Trauner is anti-gun. Gary received an A- this year from the NRA, so if you are a pro-gun democrat or independent you shouldn’t feel guilty at all voting for him.
If Lummis does get elected this year she will have little effect on policy since the house will be controlled by a large majority of Democrats. If you vote for Gary you will have a pro-gun voice in the majority party who will have a much greater impact on policy.
If it turns out that Gary is anti-gun after 2-years you can kick him out and elect Cynthia Lummis, but as it stands now he is your best chance to get your voice heard on 2nd amendment issues.

Matt, given the fact that Wyoming is the pro-gun state that it is, any candidate is going to be coming across as at the very least, fairly pro-gun. While Trauner received a high grade from the NRA this year, there are a host of other issues that I don’t trust him on (taxes, abortion, etc…), and thus he does not get my endorsement.
Trauner may claim to not be “one of those Democrats” but he kicked off his campaign this year at a convention hosted by the extremely liberal blog Daily Kos.
Secondly, no one knows what the turn out of the 434 other U.S. House races is going to be. It could very well be that the Democrats only have a slim majority next January, or perhaps, maybe, just maybe, people will be sick of the way Speaker Pelosi and Company have been ruining things the last two years, and give the control back to the Republicans.
As it stands, Cynthia Lummis lines up with more of Wyoming values than Gary Trauner does. She’s the only candidate that has legislative experience; she’s experienced in taking a government budget out of the red and into the black. I will continue to stand for and support Cynthia Lummis, no matter how pro-gun Gary Trauner makes himself to be.
