It’s no secret that the Republicans have suffered in recent elections; many have looked at the lack of social networking as part of the problem.
Ryan Dixon, a prominent YR in Kern County, CA and founder of YongRepublicansTV recently made a shocking discovery that he shared with his friends on Facebook. Not only has the “leading” GOP candidate in CA praised the now-former green jobs czar and apologized profusely for missing some of the most important elections in California (including the recall Gov. Davis vote), but she also falls way short on Twitter followers compared to the Democrat candidates, and, well, a certain other Republican in California. Just after 11:30 Pacific Time, he posted the following status update:
Republican candidates need to find people that actually know about social media- we are getting killed by the Democrats. [CA Governor Republican Candidates Twitter- Meg Whitman 3,736 Followers Steve Poizner 2,362 Followers Tom Cambell 1,530 Followers…] [CA Governor Democrat Candidates Twitter- Jerry Brown 885,729 Followers Gavin Newsom 1,122,637 Followers] [VIRTUAL NOBODY- Ryan P. Dixon 25,130 Followers]
In Wyoming, having 3,000-some-odd followers on Twitter as a leading GOP candidate would be quite an accomplishment, where utilizing technology and social networking is still a relatively new concept. Wyoming’s own U.S. Representative has only just over 1,100 followers, many of whom are not in Wyoming. But in California, a place where technology has been in place and in use for some time, and for a candidate that was the CEO of eBay??? 3,000 followers should be “just getting warmed up.”
Dixon, in a follow-up blog, concluded the following:
How can we as Republicans reach out to new people- people not involved in politics- young people, if they just have a Facebook Page and a Twitter account just to have them? They promote them sure, but they don’t use it like they should.
So here we are, just over nine months into the most liberal Presidency our country has known. What are we as conservatives and Republicans–whether we’re candidates on the local, county, state, or Federal level; or we’re leaders in our Party on some level, or we’re just the average run-of-the-mill campaign volunteer–what are we going to do to get our message out?
